QUOTE (Markymoo) It was till i get my head around grub4dos. All the help i seen has been linux based. Here is a simple way, read posts by me and Nightwalker above in this thread, starting from this one: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...ic=10806&st=182 And at this one: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...ic=10806&st=228 about Syslinux way to do it. QUOTE (Markymoo) I tried partita from but it hung i think maybe memory managers stopping it. No, partita is just a bootmanager, it ends its task LONG before any memory manager is loaded, it is possible that "hangs" on some hardware, probably USB keyboards. Also have a look at this one: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...125entry97125 (they could help about the Vid/Pid problem) jaclaz -------------------- - Fighting against bloatware since 2004, and proud of it. -

v1.0.1 is included in the current PEBuilder 3.1.10a. It's in the root folder.

Hi all.. new to the forum.. and have been messing to try to get my pny 1 gb usb stick to do bartpe booting.. running winxp sp2.. so trying to use the windows server 2003 sp1 method discussed.. the file on MS download doesn't seem to have the setupldr.bin file any more.. it has a setupldr.ex_ file.. tried a older copy of setupldr.bin from server 2003 and I get 'inf file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing status 18'. I am assuming that this is due to the older setupldr.bin file ( no rc/sp1).. if I'm doing something wrong.. please tell me what.. If I'm doing it right... can someone can point me to where I can get that file (hint hint!).. it would be appreciated. Thanks this is a great form...

.. the file on MS download doesn't seem to have the setupldr.bin file any more.. it has a setupldr.ex_ file.. The link specified in the first message just said "The download you requested is unavailable..." So I did a search on that page, in "All Downloads" for "Windows 2003 SP1" The 2nd result was "Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (32 bit) which took me to: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en With which I had no trouble with following the instructions, so I assume the files were all properly named. Hope that helps.. Cheers |

Can't remember whether this has been brought up or not but here goes. If this had already been touched on I apologize.
First off I got a Corsair 1G stick booting with not much of a problem. Had to downsize my CD image because of size problems and not booting. After I got this working it appeared to me that the same process should work with an external USB drive. I had an extra 2.5" external USB case and was able to get my hands on a 20G laptop hard drive to test it with. Used the HP utility to format the drive NTFS (FAT32 should work also but I haven't tried that yet), went through the same procedure and voila. Works like a champ. Granted the USB stick is more convenient, but this works great for those of us who might have to Ghost a drive. Being able to put that image on the drive you're booting from is pretty convenient. My image with the plugins I'm using is approximately 400M and boots in a Dell GX-280 in about 2 minutes. The drive I'm using in only 4200RPM so boot speed should be a bit better with a 5400RPM or 7200RPM disk. Someone said this before but it is worth repeating. ALL HAIL BART!!! |

QUOTE (snafu1965) Used the HP utility to format the drive NTFS (FAT32 should work also but I haven't tried that yet), went through the same procedure and voila. Just for the record, using the HP format utility is ONLY needed if the external Hard Disk is seen as "REMOVABLE". If, like most if not all, it is seen as "FIXED", you can format it all right directly through Disk Management. (there have been reports of the HP utility not working correctly on larger drives) jaclaz -------------------- - Fighting against bloatware since 2004, and proud of it. -

Which i386 do you use after I have copied the two server 2003 files. Do I use xp or w2k3 i386. You need ONLY the two files from Server 2003 SP1 setupldr.bin ramsdisk.sy_ After you have copied the two files to the /srsp1 directory, you can delete the expanded directory from Server 2003 SP1. Then you build from your normal XP SP2 /i386: Post #1 in this thread: QUOTE (Bart Lagerwej) Create the folder <pebuilder>\srsp1 Copy the file c:\server2003sp1\i386\setupldr.bin to the <pebuilder>\srsp1 folder Expand the file c:\server2003sp1\i386\ramdisk.sy_ to the <pebuilder>\srsp1 folder expand -r c:\server2003sp1\i386\ramdisk.sy_ <pebuilder>\srsp1 You can now remove the c:\server2003sp1 folder, not needed anymore... 3) Build BartPE using pebuilder as normal, you must set the output folder to "BartPE", you do not need to generate an ISO image for now. 4) Run "pe2usb -f <drive:>" to format and install the files to your UFD. Formatting is only needed the first time, so next time you can run "pe2usb <drive:>" (without -f) to update the BartPE files. jaclaz -------------------- - Fighting against bloatware since 2004, and proud of it. -

INFORMATION OVERLOAD!!!
I've been reading so much information about different ways of booting usb devices.... my brain just had a BSOD! My quest is to boot a 60G USB Drive in a couple of different options: 1. Normal DOS, so I can boot to dos and run ghost with the several images on the drive. 2. Network Boot, self explanatory 3. BartPE 4. Maybe ERD commander I have not problems getting the drive to boot or using the network boot by formatting the entire drive using the HP utility. However, the other options are eluding me. I apologize if this has been answered before... which I know it has But what is the best option to use for a large USB drive? |

I apologize if this has been answered before... which I know it has But what is the best option to use for a large USB drive? The easiest way is to make multiple partitions on the drive, then use a boot manager. There are both COMMERCIAL bootmanagers, like the excellent BOOTITNG and FREEWARE/OPEN SOURCE ones, like GRUB/GRUB4DOS or Syslinux/memdisk, and the very minimal PARTITA. In my previous post: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...ic=10806&st=269 there are links to them and howto's. Also, look at my page here: http://home.graffiti.net/jaclaz:graffiti.n...B/USBstick.html The FREEWARE bootmanager I simply love is XOSL, which is easy and graphical but since it is a bit "dated", I cannot say if it is able to manage a 60Gb disk. The "new kid on the block" is the EXCELLENT GUJIN: http://gujin.sourceforge.net/ It's really up to you..... jaclaz -------------------- - Fighting against bloatware since 2004, and proud of it. -

Charleshun, it is possible that your motherboard only supports USB-FD format, in this case you could/should try the "special" MBR makebootfat makes, read here: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=13784&st=44 Or, if it is over your head, you can post the EXACT size (in bytes and Kbytes) of your key, I could make an image of it to be tested. To deterrmine EXACTLY the size of your key proceed as follows: 1) Download Roadkil's Diskimage: http://www.roadkil.net/ 2) Run it selecting as SOURCE your Key (HARD DISK0 is your FIRST disk) and a file such as "myimage.img" as TARGET (make sure you have enough - same size of the keydrive - spaceon TARGET drive) 3) Ignore (if any) errors from DiskImage 4) once the imaging is finished, right click on TARGET file and jolt down size in bytes and Kbytes, typically: for a "128 Mb" stick: 128,000 Kbytes= 131.072.000 bytes for a "256 Mb" stick: 256,000 Kbytes= 262.144.000 bytes for a "512 Mb" stick: 512,000 Kbytes= 524.288.000 bytes The image I can make, once compressed, should be around 1 Mb or less (sparse file) so that I can send it to you via e-mail. jaclaz Hi, It is too complicated... I am a bit dissappointed and do not want to waste many time on this... Now I happily using the Pen-drive as a driver-tester transport-medium. I did not deal with this issue since my posts. But I have got an info, that I should try this: http://www.prime-expert.com/flashboot/index.php |

Hello to all,
I have read all this wonderful post (2 times), but i haven't understand a thing, so i have a question: suppose i have a pen drive with 4GB of memory, for example a Kingston DataTraveler Elite. If i install Bart PE on this pen, in particular in a partition of 800MB, can i continue to use the rest of the space in the other partition (3200MB) normally (i want to mean save data in it with all the options that the pen support, for example cryptography and serialization)? I think that is very important, so i thank you all the users that can help me Best regards |

@Markymoo
First of all, thank you very much for your reply I have now some questions about the "stage 1" 1)you say: QUOTE You will now need this driver. http://www.xpefiles.com/viewtopic.php?t=92 Unpack it to a folder on your desktop. Inside the folder is the file cfadisk.inf. You need to open this file and scroll down to you see the line %Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install, specific data Now you need to replace all lines %Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install, specific data with the line you copied from your registry like so. %Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install,USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Generic&Prod_USB_Flash_Disk&Rev_0.00 There could be more lines so replace all and save the file. But in this way the USB pen drive will works well only on one computer. Or i am in error? I need a USB flash that works well on most computer. 2)you say: QUOTE Make sure your format all partitions as Primary not Logical. Must i use the Primary partition for all partitions, also if i want to install UBCD4Win on first partition (Primary), and only store data on second partition? In other words, must be the second partition Logical? Thank you and best regards |
