Anyone know how to get these commands working under PE builder? I did notice that they dont work on ERD Commander 2002, havent tried 2003. Are they just regular executable programs that can be made into plugins for PE Builder or are they commands built into the Microsoft Command Console cli?

If you have enabled the PartitionMagic 8 Plugin you'll have a commandline tool called restorembr.exe with it.

I used the info posted in the following post.
http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=2181 I only used the stuff I needed regarding PM8 from it and ignored the stuff about ERD 2003 as I already had it working. |

Thats cool, will have to look into that. The one i wanted most though was FIXBOOT rather than FIXMBR. Guess i will have to dig a little deeper into this and find out myself if they are part of the CLI in the command console or transient commands.

If you want a free solution to restore your MBR on NT partitions, use the following: Disksave.exe (available from the Windows NT resource kit) and a copy of your MBR (or of a HDD with the MBR that you want). It's EXTREMELY simple to use. It is a DOS prompt though and "supposedly" needs to run in DOS... I haven't tested either or these in PE, but there is a "XP" solution you can use as well (available from the XP resource kit)... DiskProbe. Though, it's not as elegant. Go nuts |

Speaking of fixboot...reading the archives, it seems you had some success booting the Recovery Console on a multiboot system. In your current setup are you able to use bootscriptor (or others) and choose between PE or Recovery Console at bootup? I did not want to go to all the trouble to add Recovery Console to my cd if it does not work well. If you have been successful, did you put the files the Rec Con needs in the cd's I386 folder or did you create a new folder and patch the necessary file to point to this new folder? Thanks, Jeff |

QUOTE My recovery console does not work at boot up without an exsisting Window's installation. I do not understand. Do you mean without an existing installation on the local hard drive? I don't think I would ever want to run the recovery console without an existing windows install on which to use fixboot, fixmbr, and bootcfg. Thanks, J |

Thanks, J I work for an OEM, so I do a lot installing of the OS as opposed to working with the OS for troubleshooting. Sometimes, when WinPE doesn't format and install a MBR (doing a quick format typically does not touch the MBR regardless of what MS says), I end up having to do a full format because the OS isn't installed yet, and I need to get the MBR on there. That's why I had a sad face |
