Here is the deal. I have a compaq N600c laptop. It came with 2 restore CD's. I used these cd's to do my last reinstall but I dont like it much. It adds all the extra junk on their. I also have the problem, when I change my wallpaper and you turn on the computer, it shows the old wall paper for about 5 seconds before switching to the new one.
I borrowed a friends XP Pro cd (I believe it is the corporate edition) and tried to use my CD Key from the bottom of the laptop but it refused to take it. Is there any way I can modify this CD to accept an OEM key? Or what kind of CD am I going to need to get in order to get it to take my key. |

You cannot put an OEM CD key over a FULL install. CDs are not the same and few filea are different.
I think you will need an OEM CD, not sure if Microsoft can help in this case. But I'm sure you will break the EULA if you don't use the CD that came with your computer. OEM licenses comes with the computer, and dies with it. |

Here is the differences:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=101 http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=103 http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=104 Also one or both the CD's may have SP1 or SP2 slipstreamed: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=283 http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=312 http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=342 QUOTE But I'm sure you will break the EULA if you don't use the CD that came with your computer. The EULA is a license to use the particular version of the OS, if you have a license for OEM (the number on the sticker), it is valid however the source is procured, but it must be the SAME product, i.e. OEM, NOT PRO, NOT VLK. So you need an XP OEM CD. jaclaz -------------------- - Fighting against bloatware since 2004, and proud of it. -

QUOTE (justinzchan @ Oct 14 2005, 08:42 AM) NO: just read the post above AND links in it! a XP edition (PRODUCT) can be either "Home" or "Professional" a LICENSE can be OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), FPP(or FULL or RETAIL) or VOL/VLK (Volume License Key=Corporate) plus a few more options, listed in the said link: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=226 So you can have an XP "Home" with a Corporate (Volume Key) Licence. jaclaz -------------------- - Fighting against bloatware since 2004, and proud of it. -

It's also important to note that Microsoft has disabled the key's on the large OEM's like DELL, HP, and Compaq. Because they don't use the key on the side of the box they use special pre-activated keys. So even if he uses a standard XP HOME/PRO OEM he'll have to call Microsoft to get the key enabled for the activation.

@pvr02
I have a solution to your problem, as I am exactly have done what you are trying to do. Look under my topic here: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=14146&hl= I believe that I explain the steps there. Post here or contact me if you need futher help. You might like to search around in the internet as well. You might find it useful: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechn...y/oempreac.mspx And... Don't bother to call Microsoft or Your OEM for a copy of Windows XP OEM Installation CD, all they can say is to ask you to use the USELESS Restore CD, with all the JUNKS. Find out more about Windows Activation for OEM, Look here: http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windowsxp/activation.html |
