This is a utility to:
(re)set the passwords of any user that has a valid local account,
create a new local user with administrator rights
and set administrator rights to existing user on your NT system.

You can use it outside of winpe, but then you can only add new users
You can't perform any operation on a running os!!!

This is a great tool! I've done a little testing. The current version of this program did something flaky with one of my Windows 2000 SP4 machines. I used the tool to change a password and create a new user account (all in one session) and rebooted. Noticed that the new account was created and that the password had been changed for the other account I selected. When I use MMC to go into Local Users and Groups I get an error when clicking on Users:

The following error occured while attempting to read user properties:
An internal error occurred.

The list of local accounts comes up, but one of my accounts is not showing (one that I did not make any changes to). I go into control panel\user accounts and the account shows up in that panel. I tried changing the password for this account and it wouldn't let me (no eror message). I cannot even remove the account. Strange...

@Ixel
it is a bit strange. Reseting service uses simple net commands and it is sure that these are safe. with this tool i not make any sam hacks/modifing. Only time when this tool access to sam's is when it reads all local users to list. And it is safe to make changes in one session: add one new user; reset one user password; set admin rights to one user.

Great tool biggrin.gif

I was wondering though, could you add an option to remove accounts as well?

I think there is no reason to add this. Then this program may go destructive and fixing mistakes is going to be hard one.

I can never seem to get Renew Password to work from my PE Builder/XP CD system. It says it’s changed the password, but when I reboot and try to login to my XP Prof SP1 box(es) the new password I set does not work. Any ideas?

Are you sure that you use local accounts? and you pc is not part of a any domain?
Since in RC0 version my netapi32 commands are broken I use directly net.exe:(
so make shure that system you want to reset has net.exe at %windir%\system32 directory. And most of all make sure that your xp partition is writeable.

it is a part of a domain, but the account I'm trying to change is a local account. The drive is writeable.

unfortunatley my tool (version RC0) is not working if you pc is part of any domain.
I have some workarounds but they are incomplete.

If i am correct then winternals locksmith suffers at the same problem?

I could change the local admin account on a pc that was part of a domain...? I don't see why it should be any different for any other local account if its just net commands being used. If you want to use the linux password changer, just use isolinux w/ 2 boot options: 1) NT Offline Password Changer and 2) PE. I find it to be much faster than having to boot up PE just to change a password. In PE you could also just do it the hard way and change this in the host machine's registry:

CODE
[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]
"ScreenSaveTimeOut"="600"
"SCRNSAVE.EXE"="logon.scr"

to
CODE
[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]
"ScreenSaveTimeOut"="10"
"SCRNSAVE.EXE"="cmd.exe"

and then use net commands from there upon reboot. Just remember to change the registry back. smile.gif

Cheers
