Hi all,
PE Builder is back!
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/Release notes and known limitations:
Diskpart.exe does not work in (Window PE) when build from Server 2003. It returns error "the disk management services could not complete the operation" There is no solution yet...
The language and keyboard support is limited. The only keyboard layout currently supported is US keyboard layout.
PE Builder has been tested and known to work using the installation files from the following versions of Windows:
- Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 1) - English
- Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 1) - English
- Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition - English
Check it out, follow the section "building steps"...
Regards,
Bart.

Tried it with XP HE w/SP1 Dutch, but i get an errormessage when the iso-file is created :

What files are required from the Windows installation, and is it possible to run PEbuilder from XP HE Dutch while using an XP Pro English CD, as i don't have a system with an English XP version installed ?

Stupid me

I used the for the 'Path to the Windows Installation files' also the C:\Windows directory, because i couldn't find my cd and the Windows directory contains an i386 directory with all the installation files, but this probably causes the problem.
/edit
Found my CD's, the error does not occur when using the cd's, i get another one however :

Updated PE Builder v2.0.2b-BETA.
- When building using some languages, like Dutch you get this error:
/cygdrive/c/pebuilderv202/mkisofs: Joliet tree sort failed.
Returned exitcode 65535
Error: ISO builder (mkisofs) returned error code 65535
These non-english versions of windows have filenames that go over the maximum allowed length for Joliet filenames (103 chars).
Updated mkisofs.exe to version 2.01a17 for ISO-9660:1999 (version 2) filesystem support.
Only trouble is that mkisofs iso level 4 creates filenames in lowercase.
Had to patch mkisofs.c so that it would produce filenames in uppercase, so else the NTLDR (setupldr.bin) would fail.
Updated pebuilder
This means that the generated ISO image does not have Joliet extensions anymore!
Also updated cygwin1.dll.
- Added an option to "bypass" the ntoskrnl.exe version check.
Bart.

when compiling the ISO, I get the version error (probably cause I didn't use a slipstreamed xp sp1 cd to install my current OS, I installed SP1 afterwards), and continue, and it creates the iso successfully, but when booting the iso, it asks me to insert the XP cd in drive A. What am I doing wrong? I tried all versions (new release, a and b now) of PEbuilder.

Hey Bart, can you help me out, im currently trying to add the capability of a ramdisk to pebldr...my question is how do I set pebldr to copy the files to their correct location, like these files in pebuilder.inf
biosinfo.inf=1,,,,,,,,0,0,,1,2
default=1,,,,,,,,0,0,,1,3
halaacpi.dll=1,,,,,,,,0,0,,1,2
halacpi.dll=1,,,,,,,,0,0,,1,2
halapic.dll=1,,,,,,,,0,0,,1,2
netmscli.inf=1,,,,,,,,0,0,netmscli.inf,1,20
(small snippet)
the inf file goes to inf folder, and the sys file goes to driver folder...so Im hoping to just set it in there...thanx in advance

Sounds to me like they asked you to remove it first then try and find a reason afterwards. I think you should insist that they explain the problem to you NOW as they're interfering with your work. Argue that they themselves must know what's wrong with it or they wouldn't have had any grounds to stop it. They can't ban someone elses work just because they don't like. Tell them to give you a big pile of cash and they won't see it again

How have you done that? I've tried all tricks I could think of, only to get "joliet sorting" error message.
Best result I had, when I've tried to build on a XPpro-sp1 (italian) machine, copying XP installation CD to HDD. All went well until last...
By the way: do you by chance have a copy of 202b release (or know somebody who has)? Would you make il available to me?

I think this time they doesn't have the right to do so, you don't distribute any copyrighted software, and the way you designed the PE Builder is not considered as reverse engineering.
So this time you should ignore their warning until they can convince you that is is an illegal piece of software.

Jul 28 2003, 08:16 AM
DEMAND an answer from them NOW. While you're program is off-line, and while they're not hearing from you, they have no reason to hurry an explanation. It's in their interests to drag it out as long as possible. I would be contacting them everyday and insisting that they explain the legal case against this software.
Limer
Jul 28 2003, 09:45 AM
I think so too but in my opinion Bart shoud set a new deadlin.... M$ had one month time to check if Barts PE Builder is ok. I think this is enough time so he schoud set a deadline of two more days or so...

I agree with Doctor XP, fogerty4erv, bazz and limer...
...tell your MS contact that 30 days was sufficient time to find any problems with your pe builder v2. Demand a concise explanation as to any issue(s) with the builder or in 48 or 72 hours pe builder v2 will be back online.
It's easy for us to tell you what to do; MS is in contact with you.

You can sruely speak your mind as much as you want, just speak legally.
What TheWasp meant is that if you need a forum that you can publicly publish illegal links and files, then our forum is not suitable for you, and you go to any other forum.
I agree with him, our forum is commited to providing everyone a discussion place to legally talk about and discuss the latest technologies in Bootable and Rescue CDs, and one of its rules is that no warez/illegal links are accepted inside any topic.

I can understand that you getting unsure about what to do agains the wordless saying:"no" from MS. Infact MS is so strong and full of money that perhaps it is better not to go in heavy confrontation with them. Clear it is absolut not nice for you to have this situation. In the PeBuilders is full of your time and heart in; there are parts of your life...so it hurts deep.
When i look around and try to study about who are the people that wanna play around with such a tool so it's sure that the PeBuilders aren't tools for the most people, for the 'real masses'; will say more for PC-Freaks, -Specialist and -Administrators.I think the people that have really interesting in such a tool are browsing the www with open eyes and a 'deeper' look. They find what they looking for and so the difference between when the PeBuilder is open for download or not is not extrem.
I hope for you and us that sometime your created tools will be open for all.
And so i have finally one thing to say more: You are the men that have bring me in the end to this place. When you and your first PeBuilder hasen't exist, so i think i never had find to the place here and not in a near future my way to WinPE.
For that, your products of hardest work and your always gentle beeing i give you my hand: THANKS Bart!

@Doctor xp
Thanks, yes that makes sense.
@bart
It seems to me that they are so big and arrogant that they asked you to remove it but know they have no basis for doing so.
It's totally up to you what you do but if it were me, I'd write to them (propper letter, recorded delivery not email) demanding that they explain to you in writing, by return, exactly why they have asked you to remove your software. I would say that if no expanation is forthcoming by [a certain date, give them enough time like 30 days] you will make the software available for download again. I would add that if they ask again for the software to be removed, you will only do so once an explanation for their reasoning is given. I would also add that if no explanation is given, you will take legal advise about their harrasement.
Of course, they know they can afford any legal case and that you probably can't. Jutice is all about who's richest (alegedly).

There is actually some copyright issues currently going on. SCO claims that certain Linux kernel (v2.4 and v2.5) have violated their intellectual property and are now requesting that people get a $699 license for a single CPU.
Now I don't know if there is some truth in this, but you can read a lot of it from
Slashdot, or a search on
Google's news.
