hi,
i wanted to install windows xp on my external usb hdd, so i did the following:
insert win xp cd
boot
setup copies files to usb hdd (works fine)
first restart
boot from usb
windows xp loading screen
bluescreen stop 0x0000007b

k after a day of googling i found out that this is the normal behavior of windows xp (windows 98 works fine). this is because the nt kernel loads the usb drivers too late.
so i need a modified kernel or another workaround.

then i found out that bartpe can boot from usb with help of using 2 files from the 2003 so1. setupldr.bin and ramdisk.sys. so i downloaded the sp1 and extracted those 2 files into my xp cd. after making a new image and burning i tried it again. the copying of the files went fine again, but then the first reboot: bluescreen stop 0x0000007b sad.gif

plz help me sad.gif

i don't want to have a pe cd or usb stick or somethink like that. i dont have a internal hdd so i must use the external. there must be a way to make a normal (minimal modified) windows xp boot on it huh.gif

As far as I know (as I've had a look into this before), Window sXP does not support booting off usb as it does not recognise it as a valid drive controller.

yes and because of this bartpe also didn`t boot from usb drives before this 2 files were integrated. i just want to know how i have to integrate them to make them work like in bartpe.

@bluemonkey: because i think only you know the answer unsure.gif

@Charmin Deluxe

Sometimes what you "want" is simply not possible.

The files from 2003 SP1 work if you load the entire operating system (in the form of an ISO image) on the RAM disk.

See here, download the pe2usb101.zip
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=10806

and look into the pe2usb.cmd
