Full Version: Can I now download WinPE for free?
The CD Forum > The CD Forum > Windows PE

Hello!
I heard somewhere that Microsoft had loosened the restrictions of who can get WinPE.
Does this mean, that I now can download WinPE for free? If yes, where can I download it?

Best regards,

Colin Finck
dennis123123
Absolutely! Screw bartPE!

Linky: http://oem.microsoft.com/downloads/worldwi..._x86fre_opk.zip
ColinFinck

dennis123123
Hey, its not my link, thank the friendly folk at Microsoft™ biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
ColinFinck
But I did not find any information about this on the Microsoft website. Can you also give me a link to a Microsoft webpage, which lists this download?

Best regards,

Colin Finck
getwired
He probably can, but then he'll have to share the password used to access it. WinPE is not freely downloadable.
dennis123123
Dont be stupid, do you reallly think that I'd share one of my msdn Technet downloads with everyone?!? Infact, all downloads are encrypted secretly hidden, you would NEED my password to get it at all, or dont you think one person witld provide iso links for us all

here is another one: http://oem.microsoft.com/downloads/secreti...indowsxppro.iso

IT IS FREE NOW!

Quoted from OEM System Builder Packaging, Licensing, and COA Changes Frequently Asked Questions:
QUOTE
Can I distribute an unopened 1-pack to an end-user?OEM system builder software is designed for OEM system builders for preinstallation on new PCs. The outside of the pack states “Intended for PC and server manufacturers or assemblers ONLY”. While unopened packs can be distributed to other system builders, they are not intended for end-users. If an end-user opens the pack, they are bound by the break-the-seal agreement which requires them to preinstall the product using the OPK, support the product, and other requirements not appropriate for an end-user who does not have the skills and technical knowledge of a system builder. An exception to this is when the end-user is actually assembling their own PC, in which case, that end user is considered a system builder as well, under the definition in the OEM system builder license agreement.

It's WIndows PE 2004 BUT NOT the latest Windows PE 2005 or even Windows PE 2.0 !
dennis123123
Correct, its the XP opk, 2004.

2005 is the Windows Server 2003 OPK, which wouldnt be much use to most,
and AFAIK winpe 2.0 isnt even released yet laugh.gif laugh.gif

No, 2005 is the OPK which is able to build from Windows Server 2003 SP1. It contains RAMDisk boot and WinPE on UFD support - not supported with the 2004 release. The version has little to do with the OS it's deploying - rather it is when the features could be crammed in for deploying client or server versions of Windows.

Hmm, i didnt know that; so the 2004 opk will function with win2003, just not with SP1?

Correct.

Did you happen to notice how this thread is almost exactly THREE YEARS old? w00t.gif

In the meantime there was a tragical board update that made all old links invalid:
However the link is this one:
http://oem.microsoft.com/downloads/worldwi..._x86fre_opk.zip

You'll need to register.

Cannot say if it's still available, WinPE 1.x is replaced by newer 2.x version based on Vista.

Hello,
Windows Vista Recovery Disc Down Load:
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vist...-disc-download/

Thanks fro the link. It's a bit old too - 18 Jan 08 - but I've not seen it before.

"Microsoft seems to have realized this problem, and have thankfully made a recovery disc for this purpose.

...

NeoSmart Technologies is hosting a copy of the Windows Vista Recovery Disc for your convenience. It is a 120 MiB download, and in the standard ISO format."

Did you find any other link to (or any other info about) this so-called "recovery disc" made by Microsoft?

Old news.

Gray area.

Read here:
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=20993
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...=20993&st=4

The matter was discussed extensively among Admin and Mods of the Board, and the theory I sketched in the referenced thread was accepted by the Admin.

For all we know, it is Legal and acceptable as link posted on the board.

Well, I'll be! ... ohmy.gif ... Looked like "ol' wares" to me. Did a bit of searching... here's one explanation of how it came to be under a free license. Still a bit grey IMHO.

There's also a different download link on the page.

Thanks smile.gif

Also, FYI, with a little tweak ninja.gif :
http://www.istartedsomething.com/20080324/...-vista-sp1-rtm/

it is possible to build your own, from your own Vista SP1:
http://www.istartedsomething.com/20070929/...-recovery-disc/

Still gray area, though.

I have somewhat the feeling that the above is a rip-off of this:
http://c4consulting.com.au/soluctions/vist...0SOLUCTIONS.htm

or viceversa. hmm.gif

Starting post is on Microsoft Technet:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums...2-246f4079d0ed/

But there are several other places where this info is spread:
http://techfreaks.in/forum/f7/make-your-ow...overy-disc-980/
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/141820-c...overy-disc.html

..and it seems like Windows7 has it back:

and also as "auto-elevated":

Hello,

these are new anduseful information regarding Vista and Windows 7which is (Vista+SP1+SP2+another £150 in MS pocket)

here is a vista PE specially Hacked to repair Advent,EIsystem and Philips-Freevent vista OS
the link to ISO
http://support.thetechguys.com/layout.aspx...4-2af1d2419acb}

the fix is in TGM directory
and it loads from winpeshl.ini in x:\windows\system32
you need to mount it using 2mount.bat
and put a43.exe in there and change the file to load a43.exe file manager instead of fixboot.exe
then you can work with it
the boot.wim is nearly 200mb but when you build the ISo using 6buildiso.bat
it increases to 1.2GB so you need to use -m to change it to DVD instead of CD
=========================================
how to make a Custom Vista DVD)
Reference WAIK PE maker:
change 6makeiso.bat slightly
the -m parameter OSCDIMG removes limitation of Cd size
so it can make a DVD image size
put Boot.wim and install.wim in resources directory
and winpe.wim in waik has been changed by same Boot.wim(from DVD) and renamed WINPE.wim

the nice thing about this DVD is that it has system restore
which the othere PE (cd size ) has not got.
