Full Version: Making A Reinstallation Cd By Intergrating Dell Reinstallation Cd With
The CD Forum > The CD Forum > Windows2000/XP/Vista/Windows7 CDs/DvDs

Hi Everyone,
I purchased a Dell Dimension 4550, about March 2004, and it came with Microsoft Windows XP Professional (sp1a) reinstallation CD. Recently I read a Microsoft article, "Combining Windows XP with Service Pack 2 for reinstallation ( keywords:kbhowto KB894947) and I attempted to use my Dell supplied windows reinstallation cd for intergration with a SP2.exe file. I used the technique outlined in the Microsoft article and by using the "Autostreamer software" (http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/using_autostreamer/using_autostreamer.shtml) and by using Bart Pe (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ ) .
No matter what method I used, I didn't find a SP2.exe file in the newly intergrated file. A friend of mine used "Auto Streamer" with a Microsoft Windows Installation SP1 CD (non O.E.M.) and was able to intergrate with a SP2.exe file, which produced a file folder showing the SP2.exe file .
But with all of my attempts, the specfic utility said the file intergration was sucessfull. My question is, does a Dell O.E.M. Microsoft Windows installation CD have a different technique for file intergration with the SP2.exe update, or were my intergration techniques sucessfull but because I was using a Dell O.E.M. Windows Installation CD, is their a different file intergration with SP2.exe updates which would appear different when opening the file in Windows Explorer?
Any feedback from anyone with experience in this matter would be appreciated !

Your Friend,
Larry

Well, you might have something wrong.

BartPE is not a tool to integrate a servicepack.

Moreover, are you sure it is a "real" XP CD or is it rather a "recovery" disk.

Dell CD's have their own peculiarities, there are some fixes around.

Search for "dell" on the forum here and on MSFN.ORG, but before it have a look here:

I used AutoStreamer to integrate my SP2 file with my non-SP XP install CD and I have no SP2 file in the slipstreamed folders. Where are you expecting to see/find this file? Once it's contents are integrated into the install folders it has no further use.

PEBuilder is suppose to automatically perform the slipstream function when building a BartPE CD but I was never able to get it to work. I also don't think that PEBuilder keeps the slipstreamed folders once it's finished creating the BartPE folder so it won't help you.

SP2.exe files

Look at the root of the XP source folder after running the slipstream.

You should find a file called... WIN51IP.SP2 and a few other files in the I386 directory like sp2.cab.

Thanks Highlander999, time to look at my actual CD.

It doesn't show a files : win51ip.SP2 . If I do a windows explorer search, of my intergrated Cd, searching for files with SP2 in the file name..... It shows ISP2Busy.HT , NETASP2K.IN , MSP2 (HTLM doc) , MSP2 (text doc) , EX50SP2 ( file folder) and 50SP2.cab .
Thanks!

Why you just don't try following the specific "Dell" instructions I linked to and see if they work for you?

I've had so many interesting replies, that I've had a hard time keeping up with them!
Let me ask you this: I have only one hard drive on my computer. Now would it be "safe" to copy the C:\I386 folder, if my operating system is currently, I presume , using that folder?
Thanks!

P.S. On one reply I recieved ( I can't remember who posted it ) , concerning Dell OEM install discs, it said to
remove this file "SVCPACK.IN" and replace the "SVCPACK.IN" file from another windows install cd ( non OEM) . When I looked for the file on my Dell OEM install cd, it was not there. So I tried to slipstream anyways, with a SVCPACK.IN file from a friends disk, and I got a error message. ??????

Your double question has two answers:
1) Yes, it is safe to copy your \I386 folder
BECAUSE
2) your operating system does NOT use it.

But you will still need more files to build a CD from the files in \I386, along the lines of the 2nd link I posted.

That info comes from the same source:

and it says to :

WHICH file? The folder? It is possible that it isn't there, if your CD doesn't look like this:

It has a D:\I386\SVCPACK folder ,a SVCPACK ( DL_ file) and a SVCPACK text file but no SVCPACK.IN file in the D:\I386 folder. Which comes from reading off the disc in my DVD-rom drive.

I just tried intergating by this method you posted .......

To better clear the situation:
1) the installed \i386 directory is plain XP, i.e. 2600
2) the SYSTEM was later upgraded to SP2 via the Service Pack or Windows Update
3) the upgrade procedure does NOT modify the \i386 directory, it simply INSTALLS the upgrades to SYSTEM
4) you need, as cdob said, to SLIPSTREAM (i.e. merge) the \i386 directory with upgrades (SP 2)
5) this is better done, as said, by copying the original \i386 directory to another place and apply the changes to the copy, so that you still have the original unto

I also recieved the same error message that not all of the files needed for intergating were copied. The error message also said to check for network errors. I'm not on a network, but I have Norton Goback installed and running in the background. Is it possible that "Goback" is interfering with the slipstream process?
jaclaz
Maybe something is not as it should. blink.gif

Goback should not interfere with the procedure, but you never know.

Supposing that your system drive is C: and your CD is D: try opening a command prompt window and type in it:
CODE
DIR D: /S > C:\dir.txt

and press [ENTER]

then attach to a post the resulting file dir.txt (possibly zipped) so that we can have a clear idea of what you have on your CD.

I attempted to add the text file but I recieved the erroe message I pasted below, I will contact a adminstrator about this, then I will send the dir. file when I am able to do so.

The requested file upload failed because suitable permissions have not been enabled on the 'uploads' directory. Please contact the board administrator and inform them of this error.

Hi all

I have used Dell XP pro & xp pro SP1 recovery cd's to make slipstreamed XP SP2 source for BartPE
and to make a bootable XP pro sp2 CD without encountering the Dell specific problems which did occur with Dell XP pro SP2 recovery CD's

It is best to copy all contents of Dell XP CD to c:\xp\ [not c:\ or c:\i386] so as to make c:\xp\i386\
(other folders are not needed by BartPE)

(as win51ip.SP2 etc will be in c:\xp eg c:\xp\win51ip.sp2
otherwise if you copy files to c:\i386 you get c:\win51ip.sp2)

then integrate sp2 with contents of XP cd which is at c:\xp not c:\xp\i386

If it runs successfully then sp2.cab will be created in c:\xp\i386

Hi leoliver

Since your disk is XP SP1 it can be used to build a BartPE CD without upgrading to SP2
(since you are unable to upgrade to SP2)

A few plugins such as XPE require XP SP2
and a few plugins must be enabled / disabled for XP SP1
eg dcomlaunch on for sp2 / off for sp1

Windows Server 2003 R2: How to Get Trial Software

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003...al/default.mspx

you can make a BartPE with windows server 2003 R2

I think it is works a good as bart Pe XP SP2 .
but do not use the CHKDSK /R on your other version of windows XP (SP2, SP1 etc)

regards Ben
NOTE your Bart PE made with that Cd is going to be a regular Bart PE ;that is it is not time stamped or trial it is permanent.

Ben, I think posting should indicate that there are 2 .iso files to be downloaded:
CD 1 = 567 MB,
CD 2 = 120 MB. (A lot for phone-line downloading...)

Also, email to me from Microsoft indicates a 180-day 'trial' period, with the Product-key info.
Yours show different ? chuckr

The Windows 2003 download is a TRIAL version that has a 180 days timelimit.

If you build a BartPE from it's files, the resulting BartPE will have NO such limitations.

But please BE AWARE that by using either past the 180 days TRIAL period you are breaking the EULA's.

Licensing issues

In order to make a BartPE installation, your must have a properly licensed copy of the operating system. BartPE does not grant users who do not have a proper Windows XP/2003 license the right to use a BartPE installation.

Also, according to the Microsoft EULA for Windows XP/2003, a user may not simultaneously use more installations of these operating systems than the user has license(s) for. This also goes for BartPE. In practice this means that the user may not use, for instance, a single license installation on one computer while simultaneously using a BartPE installation (created using that license) on another computer.

CD 1 is the actual operating system
Cd2 is the service pack which has Admin tools and ACTIVE Directory (some of the stuff is optional.
I can not remember as it was months ago but I think CD1 is one you need for Bart but down load the other as it is needed if you put it on a HDD it is very useful to learn the server client networking with active directory as it dishes out passwords
to other clients and users and allows them to log in and different level of right to files for each user.
it is really good learning tool .
but as Jaclaz pointed out you can not use it after 180 days (6 months)
