I deleted the other thread in troubleshooting because I saw they had a USB forum and decided to move it here.
Here i s my problem and hope someone can help me.
I created a Bartpe and added the network and Sata drivers. If I burn the image to a CD it boots fine, but using PEtoUSB 3.0.0.7 to add the files to USB and booting the Optiplex 755 from USB it crashes with a BSOD. Its the SATA driver I know because it gave me the same error when I build a bad bootdisk without the SATA drivers.
Also I used the USB Bartpe on both an Optiplex 620 and a Inspiron 1420 and it works fine just not on a 755.
Thanks for any help.

We have just started to get the Dell 755 PCs. When i was making a ghost image for them we kept experiencing BSOD when running WinXP setup. The workaround for this was to do the following. Not sure if this is the same problem you have, but give it try.
change the SATA drive operation in the BIOS to ATA from the default AHCI

Thanks for the reply, but I was wondering if there was a fix for this where I could use AHCI. It works booting via CD fine but just not USB.

Use another NTDETECT.COM on your Boot Stick! Try the NTDETECT.COM from Windows Server 2003 SP2, that should rock!

Its normally a problem with the USB operation mode - i.e. you need to be able to set it to Legacy mode.
This can be a problem on the dells - tbh ive never been able to reliable boot off usb when using a dell machine.
My usb key doesnt work and i get the Stop 7b BSOD, my other colleague is using exactly the same make/model key and it works fine.
Unfortunately i know that this isnt much help but there isnt going to be alot we can do here until usb booting becomes alot more recognised and the functionality filters down into the mainstream bios's.

I have a 755, you need to press F6 and load the scsi drivers for the drives, because their SATA drives.
The only trouble I'm having is that BartPE doesn't find the 1000mb built in NIC. I have to use a usb nic to
image the drives.

I have gotten the Bart PE to see the Hard Drives.. I think, my issue seems to be that I get it to boot, but it freezes as soon as Bart Loads. I am unable to use the Keyboard/Mouse.
Any ideas with this?
Thank you in advance, I have rebuild 2 Bart CDs trying to get this to work on a Optiplex 755, The same build..(minus the nic and sata drivers) works on a Precision 490.

I had the same problem as packrat. The cd would boot fine but the usb stick gave me the bsod. Copied over the ntdetect.com file from my Server 2003 SP2 cd and it worked like a champ. Thanks for your post.

I have made a BartPE "plugin" to replace the NTDETECT.COM as you described if you build BARTPE with XP CD.
plugin in attachment.

Thanks for the plugin idea. Please share the plugin text only.
