Full Version: Microsoft ERD Commander... free!

I know BartPE CDs are more flexible in that you can add more stuff to it, but I haven't seen a BartPE CD with fully functional System Restore and a tool for checking system file integrity.

So that's why I have ERD Commander burned to a Mini 185 MB CD-RW.

And guess what guys, ERD Commander is free now, from Microsoft (click that link on top). As they said, it's not compatible with "attaching" to Vista installations.

If I'm wrong about anything I said above (regarding fully functional System Restore or a tool for checking system file integrity on BartPE), please let me know, I will be glad to know.

Isn't this technically illegal? (warez, anyone?) rolleyes.gif

Good luck trying to sell ERD Commander now, Microsoft, LOL!

#EDIT:
Btw, I still prefer using my BartPE CD. I have a large variety of custom tools and stuff on it, and it's not buggy at all. But ERD Commander seems to be pretty buggy (freezing/crashing everywhere), and lack of driver support. And it doesn't support changing resolutions.

As I said before, the only reason I have ERD Commander written to a mini CD-RW is for the System Restore feature and the System File Repair features that BartPE lacks.

My BartPE CD is written to a 700 MB CD-RW, and I struggled to get it down to 692 MB from 704 MB ISO after updating, by upx'ing stuff, and stripping useless 9X-only exe's. And then I could add more tools onto it, so right now, my BartPE CD stands at about 699 MB.

Yes. I have deleted the 2 posts that tell how to avoid the 30 day limitation.

You say that like its somehow ok to use the download beyond the 30 day trial period... which would technically and morally be wrong IMO. So I guess you do advocate people using software illegally like that then... thumbdown.gif

@rdsok: Please get back on topic.

Now, again, if any of you know of plugins for BartPE that provide equivalent features that I want (i.e. System File Repair tool + System Restore tool) from ERD Commander, I'll be glad to hear it.

AgentGOD, the only tool I know to debug Windows installations with some efficiency is ERD Commander... Maybe one day M$ will made available something usefull for us, freely... But for now we need to pay even to debug our own home install, this is a shame but true.... We have the knowledge but we need to pay... anyway... This is the M$ way and we cannot do anything... Corporates have tools easy, and home users are only crap for M$ sometimes...

Bed time, too much work for today...

But I still prefer BartPE over ERD Commander. To me, the only things BartPE lacks are the features I mentioned above, but other than that, I think it's pretty good.

I really do think Microsoft should provide us (the home consumers) a way to recover our PCs, and not force us to get someone else to do it for us (Geek Squad), or figure it out ourselves (BartPE).

You know what, I think it's just a business cycle. Microsoft -> Confuses non-computer people on purpose -> They call geek squad -> Geek squad uses WinPE and Microsoft makes money off of them for licenses.

As you've said, Microsoft probably doesn't give a living **** about us computer geeks who have the knowledge and will probably never use Geek Squad, neither are they generous enough to provide us a free recovery solution. Greedy b******s.

But what's the point of it? I don't think ERD Commander needs to "write to the CD drive"...?

oscar
Good enough to add things that do not need installation like Firefox Portable, for ex.

Hello,
here is useful info for making a ERDCommander USB bootable memory stick.
http://forum.xatrix.org/tutorials-f26/erd-...-usb-t1552.html
you will find all links here are alive and not like the first post here which points to a loop !!! from the new owners.
also to add programs to the root of Cd just use powerISO
http://www.poweriso.com

or use UltraISO which is Free
http://www.ezbsystems.com/enindex.html

to load the iso and then add folders or files then save
then make a new Cd from new ISO
