Full Version: WinPE vs Windows Server 2008 Core?

I have been out of the PE world for a while now but not out of the Microsoft world! Il admit I am a geel by trade and am always thinking up few funky Ideas some that where better left to myself and other that can be of use in one way shape or form.

I have been playing around with 2008 Server since its early days of alpha builds and now that its out and fairly stable for the most part (if you have plenty of ram) I had a chance to play with Hyper-V for about 5mins until I found that I needed a CPU and Mobo BIOS that supports F3 Stepping. I have a AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ with a Mobo that does not support Hyper-V (im waiting for Gigabyte to realse a new bios. but not sure if it will happen.) with 4GB of DDR-2/800 RAM. Bottom line is I wasnt really able to compair Hyper-V to others like VMWare of Virtual Server 2005 since I lacked the proper hardware support.

So a thought came to mind, 2008 Server Core is kinda like a thicker version of PE (Only im not sure about its portability). And Maybe I could install VMWare of Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 ontop Core 2008. Maybe even find a way to install Core 2008 into a Flash Drive and VMware ontop of that and you would be rocken.

Just another random Idea that came to mind that I see a lot of options for. But theres always that damn. Licensing Issue. Not sure if the cost for a 2008 Core License would be worth the need of wanting this type of configuration.

Thoughts/opinions?

Hi, MrXP!

Strange enough but I'd choose Ubuntu as base OS because of the machine/resource efficiency rate.

Besides the obvious need to purchase licenses for each server machine/virtualization packages, the costs of acquiring new hardware fit to support the "optimal" configuration and all the time spent in making a portable installation I simply think it would be easier/wiser to move onto a more flexible platform where you have more conditions to push every ounce of performance from the machine for virtualization purposes.

---

I suggest trying out virtualbox and compare the results against the other two emulators: http://www.virtualbox.org

This is my thought on the matter - ubuntu may not be better - but it's free.

Its interesting that you bring this concept up as my co-worker and I have also been talking about trying this. I am actually going to start working on this over the next few weeks as I will have some extra time on my hands. I will post any results I come up and let you know what I find.

Just curious where you ever able to give the concept any more thought? Iv been thinking of playing around with the idea a little. Im almost certain it can be done just needs a practicle meathod to peicing everything together (while not breaking/bending any EULA's).

A little off the topic, but I saw a few Asian websites talking about using 2008 Server Core and then using Blackbox as a GUI. I thought that was a pretty good concept, but there's not much info and it's a foreign language for me. I'm not sure what features aren't included, but I'm guessing that doing the 2008 Core and then using the 2008 Server to workstation conversions and adding Blackbox on top, might make a pretty cool little OS.
