Full Version: VistaPE Review: The future, just not yet......

I just wanted to say that I recently downloaded the Winbuilder system and it's coming along nicely. Unfortunately, even with out-of-box default settings, I still haven't managed to get a working CD as it's either error message hell or BSOD's on boot, although the majority out there are in my boat and this still is a beta so I'm not complaining. I do see the potential of what this offers as Bart CD's will slowely disappear in favor of the more compatible Vista kernel. I have seen some users actually get this to work as there are a couple of finished disk's on torrent sites which are very good. For now I'll wait it out while they iron out the kinks so I'll return to this section sometime next year as good things need time to develop. Keep up the good work and I'll see all of you in a couple of months when you guys release your non-beta, stable version.

Thanks, The CAT

Out of the box the LiveXp project produces a working XP based PE with explorer as the shell. It does however appear to offer less explorer functionality than Bartpe + sherpya xpe.

Not sure what you mean by "beta" as the next beta round has not yet offically begun. The current stable is 074.

Which project did you attempt to build that wasn't working? Did you download the latest version from the respective project server?

Regards,
Galapo.

But the subject you posted for this thread is "WinBuilder Review". I change it to "VistaPE Review" to better reflect what you are discussing.

You need to take into account some of the requirements to build VistaPE that differ so much from a XP machine since I assume you're using Vista as your work OS.

- Run as administrator (preferably without UAC enabled)
- Ensure you have write permissions (ownership) on the folder where your projects files are located
- Support to create boot disks on x64 Vista machines is not working well (HP Laptops with x64 AMD turion for example)
- Try with Windows WAIK to ensure that the issue is not your Vista DVD source files.

Sometimes it also helps to start from a fresh folder, download only the required files from the Download Center and create a simple boot disk without adding any extras.

The overall complexity of the project build comes inherent with Windows Vista and all the restrictions that need to be respected along with care about x64 CPU's as they are becoming the standard.

Nightman has produced a good amount of documentation that you find on his project site: http://vistape.net/vistape-doc.html and the forums also address most of the possible issues that you might run into.

If none of this helps you get working results then I suggest posting your log.html file so that we can take a look and see if something is missing or not being handled properly, the more details you supply about your build conditions, the better.

Allanf has also published another wb based project based on the Vista kernel that is built strictly from Windows WAIK for Vista.

You only need to install Windows AIK on your windows machine, and start the project to get a good boot disk with Windows PE 2.0 and some good optimizations.

On the first time the project is run it will download some apps from the Internet so you'll need web connection or they won't be included.

The_CAT, would you be available to do a WinBuilder review within next week?

The next round of beta versions for wb 075 should start this weekend and there are plenty of good improvements added inside, so it would be a good time to hear feedback about good or bad things on WinBuilder.exe so that things can be changed while the beta discussion is going.

Regarding wb projects - each developer modifies or improve their projects and scripts as they wish. WinBuilder is the engine used for running these projects and everyone is welcome to change and make boot disks the way they like.
