Customizing the Windows Shell Bootskin Control Files Graphics
===============================================
If you are interested in changing/customizing the Default Windows Shell BootSkin Graphic
i.e. ( the default Windows Logo ) 1st screen seen during system boot )

Assuming you have a default Windows-XP hard-drive installation @ C:\

Instructions below for REATOGO-XPE / BARTS-PE Builds

***********************************************************
excerpt from another post , very effective method.

TuneUp 2008

http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-uti...0&sy=146#st

Download program, install, Run it , navigate to
Customize Windows / TuneUp Styler / change Bootscreen
next , change the boot skin
TuneUp2008 will now create TUKernel.exe
TUKernel.exe will then be found in folder \Windows\system32

TEST new File by Rebooting WINDOWS, to confirm your new BootSkin Graphic is applied.

______________________________________________________________________
*Note * this will change your default Windows C:\boot.ini File and will add an additional line to it
above the default Windows entry, during the Win boot process you will see a screen givig you a choice
of boot method , The new entry by TuneUp 2008 will be first and read

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional (bootscreen)"
/fastdetect /KERNEL=TUKernel.exe /NoExecute=OptIn /TUTag=T5CGC1

Un-installing TuneUp2008 will re-write the boot.ini file and return it to the Windows default.

_____________________________________________________________________
Next >copy Tukernel.exe to C:\TEMP and rename to ntoskrnl.exe

then copy-paste add the modified ntoskrnl.exe to your reatogo build
Folder
i386\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

================================================
The best method to accomplish this during the REATOGO build phase
( when running reatogoBuilder.exe) is to create a copy.bat file
place it on your desktop so you can double-click/run the file during the
compliation process before REATOGO finishes the compile<
> before it starts to Burn to CD or create an .ISO file

For this example, I placed the NTOSKRNL.EXE file into
C:\REATOGO-240\plugin\AUTOHELP\MyWallPapers

Contents of the copy.bat file below ( substitute your own directory and file paths )
================================================
CD C:
C:
CD C:\REATOGO-240\plugin\AUTOHELP\MyWallPapers
COPY NTOSKRNL.EXE C:\REATOGO-240\ReatogoXPE_Build\I386\SYSTEM32 /Y
exit

Other Programs / Information / and Methods on
Customizing the bootskin graphics in WINDOWS

BootSkin and SkinStudio6 Freeware

Minimun System requirements
* Windows XP
* 10MB free drive space
* 256MB RAM

http://www.stardock.com/products/bootskin/

************************************************************

BootSkin is a computer program for Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista
that allows users to change the screen displayed while the operating system is booting.
It is made by Stardock, and distributed for free under the WinCustomize brand.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

BootSkin uses a boot-time device driver (vidstub.sys) to access the display directly using
VESA BIOS Extensions (VBE), unlike other bootscreen changers which alter the image of
the boot screen inside the kernel.
This has the advantage of not modifying system files, and makes higher-resolution boot
screens possible
; standard boot screens are limited to 640x480 with 16 colors.
Unfortunately, some graphics cards and chipsets do not have good support for VBE,
preventing their use with BootSkin.

Due to the severe restrictions on color depth, many images are not suitable for use as boot skins.
Successful skins tend to take advantage of the limitations through the use of a
limited palette and dithering techniques.

Install to C:\Windows\Program Files
Experiment with this Program on a Windows O.S. & when you have sucess
Make a plugin for REATOGO-XPE with it .

* NOTE*
I have not successfully made a Plugin that transfers
BootSkins applied function to a REATOGO-XPE - Barts-PE pre-compilation build
Any Administrators or Members who could give it a try , please post results and methods here

The main Program Control Files and where the install Program Puts them
1. System32\drivers\vidstub.sys
2 program files\common files\Stardock\ODZip.dll

THE DETAILED HOW-TO> http://martin.joeuser.com/article/1886

^Read through carefully after downloading and installing the 2 Programs below
==============================================
SkinStudio6 Freeware < Secondary complimentary program to BootSkin < USE 1ST

^ Used to prepare your Customized Boot .BMP Graphics

Download SkinStudio6 Freeware

==============================================
Download BootSkin Freeware

^ USE to apply new BootSkin to the Bootup Shell
==============================================
Alternative Versions:
Some drivers and bios makers "break the rules" which can cause BootSkin to not work correctly.
If you experience that, you can remove BootSkin by deleting \windows\system32\drivers\vidstub.sys.
And then try one these alternative versions.

As far as I know there is a plugin named Window-is-blind or something like that which does this kind of stuff.

I never understood why folks risk all kind of hidden issues later on just to change some screens they only see for seconds during boot ???

The Owner / Administrator, of any Computer using
REATOGO XPE / Barts PE / or just a standard Windows Hard-drive / USB / or VMWare installation and build
on a Personal Computer or LapTop , Should have the skill sets and knowledge to have complete control of all aspects of Personal CUSTOMIZATON of that build / Installation Environment, as well as the skill sets and
knowledge to control all Software / Programs running on that Computer.

Based on that statement someone might say since you don't have the skills to do the customization you want you shouldn't be working with REATOGO XPE / Barts PE.

You'll get more help with a different mindset.

Customisation and changing bootscreens are two pairs of shoes.

Some folks would even say that changing boot-screens is illegal.

Would you say that every XP-user should have the skills to patch binaries ? Thats ridiculous
