Hello-

I don't know if this is the right area to post this but I am trying to add xp recovery console to my BCDW boot cd. I put all of the necessary files (eg I386 ect...) after burning my CD I put it into my computer and boot up BCDW disk. It comes up with my menu I made with RC I choose RC and it says setup inspecting hardware then it goes to load the files and its starts loading files then I get the error "The file CMDIDE.SYS could not be found" All of the files are there I have done everything I can think of and can't seem to find the solution. I downloaded the 7mb recovery console iso on the web and burned it to a cd and it works fine, I tried using the fiiles off of that cd and put them onto the BCDW cd and it does the same thing. I just can't seem to get the recovery console to work with BCDW. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong or what I need to do to get it all to work right?

thanks for your help,
PD

Does exist a file cmdide.sys or CMDIDE.SYS at CD?
Uppercase is required.

Thank you for the response, yes the file CMDIDE.SY_ exist in the I386 folder on the boot cd x:\I386\CMDIDE.SY_ (X: = cd drive letter) in all caps. Should the file be in the root of the boot cd x:\CMDIDE.SY_ where the files WIN51, WIN51IC, WIN51IP, WIN51IP.SP2 files are? Thank for trying to help me with this problem.

x:\I386\CMDIDE.SY_ is fine.

Well, how do you prepare CD? Write more details.

To simplify things, use this batch by Dean Adams to create a "simple" XP recovery CD from the setup disks:
http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=2254

Once the "simple" CD works, try adding it's contents to your multiboot one.

I have found this as well and tried it and used it to create a recovery cd and it works but the problem I am having is when I try to put the nessasary file into my BCDW cd disk I keep getting the CMDIDE.SYS error, which is the reason I am confused and don't know what is wrong, I think it might be something I am not putting in BCDW right I am not really sure.

Ok in my BCDW (ver 1.50z) bootcat.ini file I have \i386\boot.bin ; Recovery Console boot bin ; Recovery Console boot bin

in the newer ver of BCDW (ver 201a ) the bcdw.ini file has \I386\setupldr.bin ; Microsoft Windows XP Setup

I take the I386 files off of the recovery boot cd that I have already made (that I know works) and put them into the folder I am using called My BootCD so the path would be C:\My Bootcd\I386 and I have all of the other necessary files needed and I burn the files onto a cd using easy media creator v10 with the boot image (I tried both versions) boot.bin for ver 150z or the setupldr.bin for ver 201 with no emulation, 07z0 loading address, 4 sectors. I still get the same error with either version I use. I have even tried making an iso image out of the recovery cd and saving the boot information to WBT and try to use it this way but still the same error. I am at a loss I just don't understand what is the problem. I thank you for trying to help with this problem. If you need any more information please let me know and I will try and answer.

OK, found something, maybe not the problem, but something that does not look entirely "kosher".

DO NOT use anything but mkisofs .

DO NOT use a path with spaces.

Are you building from a FAT32 or a NTFS drive?

BCDW dosn't cause the CMDIDE.SYS error. There is another reason.

There is no CMDIDE.SYS error?
Solution use mkisofs to create a ISO image first.

Try the same approach: use mkisofs to create a ISO image.

no when I use the downloaded iso file from the web (a 7mb iso) it burns to a cd and will boot up and start recovery console just fine.

I am a noob when it comes to making boot cds could you point me in the right direction where I can learn how to use mkisofs to create the iso image out of the files from the recovery console cd I created.

thank you for all you help,

As for a starter, try the already mentioned solution first.

Do you get a bootable CD?

The RecoveryCD.bat contains a mkisofs example.

If you are willing to experiment a bit with RC and have available Windows Server 2003 SP1 or R2 files (NOT "gold", NOT SP2), you might find this thread (AND links within it) interesting:

I have looked through those pages (until my eyes crossed) and I have followed all the instructions for creating this BCDW with the recovery console but I still can't get it to work. When I am setting up the BCDW it looks just like how the instructions say to do it but I keep getting the "The file CMDIDE.SYS could not be found" error I have tried all kinds of ways to get this to work and I come up with either the cmdide error or another image asks for the windows xp professional sp2 setup disk and another one goes all the way through and gets past the cmdide error and gets to starting windows and then freezes and gives me a blue screen of death and then just to make sure I pop in the recovery console cd I created from the 7mb file off the web and boot the PC I am using and it goes all the way through without a problem. So it has to be something I am not doing right, because others have gotten this to work. If you would like to take a look at my files and my setup I posted the whole thing in a winrar file. Click Here to download my BCDW files I have put together. I am not asking for someone to finish it for me, if someone could just take alook at it and see what I am not doing right. I have been trying to get this to work for about 2 weeks now with no end in sight. Getting alittle batty. There are files I probably don't need in the folders but being that I am still trying to build it I didn't clean it up yet just incase I needed other files. I would really appreciate anyone's help to show me or explain what stupid thing I am doing wrong or not doing at all. Maybe a fresh pair of eyes is what it needs to see something that I clearly can't seem to find.

thanks,
PD

@TheMrPD

Use a proper ISO tool and settings.

E.g. command line from previous mentioned RecoveryCD.bat, slightly adjusted to BCDW
CODE
mkisofs.exe -iso-level 4 -volid XPRC -b bcdw/loader.bin -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -force-uppercase -hide loader.bin -hide boot.catalog -o "XPRC.iso" "My BCDW Files"

cdob-

YOU ARE THE MAN! I looked at the command line you typed in for mkisofs and I figured out another thing I was probably doing wrong. I was not in the root of the hard drive I was under my documents. I put all of the files into C:\BCDW and typed in what you wrote and it went through. I burned it to a CD, booted my computer from it and recovery console FINALLY WORKED! No problems or errors. I even got it to work with the older BCDW version 150z using the modified boot.bin file and it worked also. I want to thank everyone who responded with suggestions and especially you CDOB!

Thank you again,
PD
