Hello everyone,

I am kind new to using WDS and winpe.

I have a wds server runnning in mixed mode and have successfully created and edited Vista PE boot images to match my enviroment. The problem is that i have not been able to find drivers for some of the older machines since the vista pe requires vista nic and disk drivers which are not available on the vendors site. I did find an article that instructed me to use WDS in mixed mode so that i can use boot images other then .wim files. I have done this but my next question is how do create winpe images for WDS using XP? Can i use something like bartpe? I keep hearing about these driver packs for winpe but it seems they are talking about XP PE and not VISTA.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hello jdflory,

Depending on the drivers you are looking for you have to ensure that the drivers are signed. WinPE and peimg have some real issues with injecting unsigned drivers.

As for making a WinXP wim image. I am unsure as to what you mean, are you meaning a WinXP deploy image, or a WinXP environment?

If it is the later, You wont be able to create a WinXP environment such as a BartPE environment. WDS is made specifically for Vista and Windows 2008 environments.

If it is the first, you can definately create a deployment WinXP wim. You will need a sysprep that is for the WinXP operating system. A quick google search will yield the one you need.

The steps you will need to do to create a WinXP deployment image are:

Install WinXP to a machine, this can also be a virtual machine
Install all drivers in to the Windows XP environment
Run sysprep with Factory Install option selected.
Choose to shutdown the system. This will allow for easier capture.

There are two ways to capture the image.

The first is to boot in to a winpe live cd environment, the second is to use a WDS capture image.

You can find an article on google on how to perform both.

Once in the environment, you can perform a network image capture or a local drive capture.

If you need more details on how to do this, let me know.
