I am having some problems booting my 32gb Super Talent Pico drive on my Shuttle Barebones XPC (SG45H7). Previously I was trying to boot from usb to update my bios and was getting a "mbr helper missing" error message, but that has now gone away...

I have used the HP 2.1.8 tool to format to FAT32. I used grubutil 1.1 to install grub4dos to the mbr with "whole disk (MBR)" option. This leaves me with a drive that will boot on many different machines with very few problems. On my shuttle I see it flash up searching all the drives for grldr (i.e. hd0, hd0,1, etc) and then it hits fd0 and will drop to the grub4dos command line (even though I have menu.lst, etc at the root of the drive...)

any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks

if grldr is loaded, you may try to edit the embedded menu.lst in it. (removing the --ignore-floppies directive)
But if grldr cannot find menu.lst, and it is solved by the above, it means that that motherboard BIOS somehow sees the stick as "suprfloppy".
You might want to try with fbinst.

took me a while to read through some of the guides but I think I got it working with fbinst. I will try installing win 7 on my shuttle and see if it works the way I think it will smile.gif

That worked great jaclaz, I will have to try my flash drive out on some other computers that used to not boot with the HP format tool+ Grubutil...
