Full Version: creating a WinPE based Acronis true image CD
The CD Forum > The CD Forum > Bootable CDs
tommytoad
Hello everyone.

I am new to all this, but aparanty i cannot make a BartPE CD, because i have a pre-installed operating system, so i have a recovery partition
So i do not have any windows installation files, on my system.

I have acronis true image home 2009 installed on my Toshiba laptop running windows vista home premium 32 bit.
I have the Acronis true image home 2009 BartPE plugin, and also downloaded PE Builder, but i became "STUCK" in a word, because i have no installation files.

So could i create a WinPE based acronis true image home 2009 CD.

But i am not familar with doing this , if this is possible.
As i say i am new to this, and just about figured out how to create a BartPE CD only to find out that i coulden't

Maybe you still have some possibilities:

Other people managed it:

If you only have vista, then the waik is your best option. BartPE is only for xp / 2003, for anything later you'd have to hop over to boot-land.net

I thought Acronise gives you option to make a basic recovery CD (rescue) ??

the only imaging software that I have tried and it runs without plugin in Vista PE is the latest ghost32.exe
inA43.exe just double click it or drop bart's menu in system32 and ghost32.exe in system32 folder as discribed in one of the links above.
in above link you learn from Basic while with the Russian guy's VistaPE it is Auto and you do not learn any thing.

Hello Ben

Yes i have created the true image rescue cd, and that works fine.
But the other day i was doing nothing, so i thought about creating a bartPE or WinPE cd, "just for something to do"

But the more i go into this, it gets confusing or complicated, i have the acronis True image plugin for the BartPE, but i suppose you can use this for the WinPE as well.

I don't actually need to create one, as i have the Acronis rescue cd, but as for something else to learn about, i thought i would try my hand at one of these
or create one of these.

But as i said i don't really know what my best option is running vista 32bit
I am completly new to all this, and thought it would give me some understanding of WinPE if i was to create an additional CD .
And just try to learn how to create one and add the plugin in the proccess

But really if i don't fully understand WinPE and what it actually all doe's should i go ahead and create one.....

Some disambiguation is needed:
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...20318&st=12

WinPE is a "generic" name.
It means Windows Pre-installation Environment.

There are "original" WinPE's, version 1.x based on NT 5.x files (XP/Server 2003)
There is "original" WinPE, version 2.x based on NT 6.x files (Vista/Server 2008)
There is "original" WinPE, version 3.x based on NT 7 files (Windows 7).

Than there is Bart PE builder that can create EXCLUSIVELY a 1.x PE from XP or Server 2003 files.

Than there is Winbuilder that can create (using different "projects"), 1.x, 2.x and 3.x PE's.

I might have started to run before i can walk here, i have jumed into the unknown bangin.gif
I have started at the deep end.

I have saved quite a few of the links though for future reference...

But i might try my hand at something a bit easier first , like creating a recovery options cd for vista , and to learn about that first
I am not comparing this to WinPE, but there is a lot to take in with WinPE.

So is there any tips or advice about creating a recovery options cd, for windows vista sp2 32 bit, to get me started...... rolleyes.gif

Look two posts below the given one:
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...20318&st=12
here:
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...20318&st=14
that is the "easiest" possible recovery environment available.

To create a recovery CD from Vista, you need Vista SOURCES (which you say you do not have) unsure.gif
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Recovery_Environment
and SP1

Or see here:
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=20993

or get the WAIK:
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...=18758&st=0

Take your time, there is a rather steep learning curve, but after some initial points to grasp it's not that difficult. smile.gif

Thankyou for pointing me in this direction

OK jaclaz, i followed this link, http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vist...-disc-download/

Which went fine, but i have not tested this yet, is there anything i should know before testing it.
As this is not an actual restore or repair, i am affraid of pressing any wrong keys during testing, or is it pritty easy to follow once you insert the recovery cd.

The first boot order is set to cd/dvd in the BIOS.

AT least i have made a start jaclaz...... thumbsup.gif
jaclaz
Well, as always, the act of "testing" IMPLIES a bit of risk. sad.gif

But you shouldn't be able to do "damages" unless you behave "irrationally". smile.gif

A good idea would be to setup a Virtual Machine to start the testing.

Virtualbox is fairly easy to setup and run:
http://www.virtualbox.org/

even better, you can use the "portable" version of it:
http://www.vbox.me/
that needs NOT to be installed.

Hello jaclaz.

I may have behaved a bit "irrationally" as i did not use the virtual box, i think i understood the "Windows aik" more than the virtual box.
But then again, nothing makes sence when you don't understand it, and i have to be honest, nothing made any sence.. bangin.gif

Anyway the recovery option cd worked just fine, no problems , i just followed the instructions in this link about a quater of the way down the page

http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=622

and it went exactly the way it was described...... happy65.gif

So where do i go from here, as to carry on learning about bootable CDs, the recovery cd was a bit "nerve racking" to make as i have not done anything like that before. sweatingbullets.gif

So what would be the next step jaclaz "if any" to carry on learning, or which direction to go in. rolleyes.gif

Now it comes the difficult part wink.gif

Start reading here:
http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showforum=51
http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=8190

Take your time around, it won't be easy the first build.

You'll need to download the WAIK, too.

Or maybe (alternative) you could try starting directly with Windows PE 3.x (i.e. Windows 7), this would be a good place to start:

The link above jaclaz, my anti virus picked up a trojan while downloading the page ??? thought i would just let you know

OK jaclaz will do, though i suppose i will be posting more questions than actual reading

Just a reminder, i am using Vista ,32 bit ,home premium, so anything i do or download will be fine for this.

UPDATE
About that trojan warning.

Hmm, really strange.

I guess it is the "stupid" new skin of boot-land.

Try logging in, then switch to the "old" skin.

And try again if the AV detects it as well. unsure.gif

I use avast! and have no problem accessing jaclaz's link. The link above talks about two different situations as being the problem, one is a 0 length zip file and the other some links to AV scans. I wonder if the problem lies in a random ad on the page thus it doesn't impact all visitors.

It is possible.

But once you are logged in (at least using the "good ol'" skin wink.gif) ads are OFF.

jaclaz

I use the 'classic' skin.

And my Avast also tells me about a Trojan.

Therefore >> no ad reason.

Hello jaclaz.
I am still on the virtual machine. getting there slowly. rolleyes.gif

But could you tell me this, its a quote from the acronis support forum

so if you want to pursue the VistaPE route, you'll need to use the "Acronis BartPE" VistaPE script. I think that script is included (or available) in the standard VistaPE download.

is this script available in the standard vista PE download jaclaz....

Wouldn't it be "natural" to ask the explanation of a quoted text where you find it? hmm.gif

You do have an idea of the number of version of Acronis products that are around, don't you? unsure.gif

Click on this ninja.gif :

However, let me know if you find a VistaPE .script called "Acronis BartPE" and I'll personally take care of teaching it's Author some basic ideas on how to name things!

I have handy a remarkably sturdy two-by-four (cedar, polished) that is said to be a very good aid in explaining certain concepts and expecially in making them enter some people's head... wink.gif

OK jaclaz, i see your point, this is more confusing than ever, even the virtual box is confusing at times, is there no easy way just to create a Vista PE recovery CD, or am i just not picking it up.

Can i not try this, and then go back to the virtual box and test it.
I did find this http://www.mechrest.com/plugins/BartPEGuide/VistaPEGuide.htm

I need to concentrate on one topic or lesson, i have been looking at to many web pages and getting confused

OK jaclaz, Right you are, i will just build up enough knowledge of it all and the proceed.
While i am here though

Will this download of WAIK work with Vista SP2, if its been updated
And download Winbuilder 076

Downloading and Installing the Windows AIK:
1. The Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) is a free download from Microsoft. You can get it at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en. It is a 992 MB download, so you will need a broadband connection. (This is the pre-Service Pack 1 WAIK. It may be installed in a Vista SP1 system. The SP1 WAIK will not work with WinBuilder 074
