Full Version: Installing Windows 7 (32-bit) From BartPE

Hi Everyone

I have attempted to launch the 'setup.exe' for Windows 7 from BartPE (which has been created using WinXP SP2 & XPE). From which I get the following error message:

Windows installation cannot be started from the current operating system. To install Windows, boot from the installation media, or upgrade to Windows XP SP2 or later and restart the installation."

I assume this is due to BartPE reporting an invalid OS version.

Would anyone have any advice or suggestions on how to overcome this issue.

Thanks
Nuno Brito
Start the windows 7 install procedure using Windows PE 3.

Joshua has released a project for this new platform that might interest - http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=8774

If you talk with the author, he might even include everything needed to automate this procedure.

I never heard anyone having success with XP-based-PE installing Vista or Seven.

It's possible with Server 2003 SP1 (BartPE), VistaPE or 7PE.

But If you want to try it with XP Bartpe may this is helpful:

You will need Joshua Sp2 plugin --> http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...ost&p=74807

$Win7CD$\Sources\setup.exe does check for the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Minint Registry key to determinate if it is A PE or not.

If this Key exist, it using mostlikely kernel32 API to check if it is XP or 2003 PE. If it is XP you get an error message thumbdown.gif

If this key is not present (was deleted after booting) Setup will not give error but will make additinal checks if the PC is ready for Vista / Seven (hope someone can pass these smile.gif )

Thanks JFK, after adding these additional values (modified for XP XP3) I have been able to install Windows 7 without issue. Really appreciate the help.

Andronics, could you please tell what values exactly you modified? I would also like to install Windows 7 from BartPE, but ran into the error mentioned above several times and with different modifications to the CD.

Thanks!

Maybe there are "better" ways, now wink.gif:

As you know, stupid setup.exe for nt 6.x (vista/win7/2008/2008 r2) has many limitations:

1. You can't start install vista/win7 under xp based pe (winpe 1.x) and can't install win7 under win2000
.....
Based on this, I wrote an "nt 6.x fast installer" which has the following advatages compare to the original M$ setup.exe:
1. You can install nt 6.x directly from iso file mounted by any kind of virtual drive.
And you needn't extract or burn the iso.
2. You can directly install nt 6.x from any version winpe and win2000 above windows
....

Check in an install of the SAME XP that you made your BartPE from the values of keys listed in joshua's plugin (if SP3):
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...amp;#entry74807
and change them accordingly (unless you build form a SP2, in which case you can use the plugin directly).
Then rebuild the PE, boot it and delete the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Minint.
Finally run the 7 setup.

There is also now the JFX tool JFYI:
