Full Version: can add SATA driver to USB stick after BartPE build?

Hey all ... Frankie here ... BartPE newbie ...

I've been playing around with a variant of BartPE v3.1.10a called HawkPE-42 ...

I've burned the HawkPE-42-CD.ISO as is to a CD and that seems to boot OK and work well enough.

I have found that the driver (Si3132.sys) for the Syba ExpressCard/54 SATA controller I want to use will not install once up in the Hawk/BartPE O/S .. consequently, no attached SATA drives are seen. Not sure why it won't install.

I've also managed to get HawkPE-42 built on to a USB stick and that boots and works well enough as well.

Then I read up on how to place the required driver in its' own folder in the \drivers folder as well as the neccessary edits to oemsetup.txt, both done prior to a build.

Obviously, if I want a CD that will boot and load my SATA driver, I'm going to have to burn again, however, I'm wondering if I can perform edits / additions to the built folder/file structure on the USB stick ... to see what works and what doesn't ... first.

I read Ed P's topic: Adding drivers to BartPE, NIC, SATA, video and have d/l'd DriverPack Mass Storage 9.01 for Windows 2000/XP/2003 (x86) ... but, as yet, have not gone any further with that approach. I want to try adding just the driver(s) I need and see how that goes first. FFF

You joking right? hmm.gif

You come here with a pre-built - downloaded from somwhere on the net - (please read WAREZ ph34r.gif) version of a pre-built PE? w00t.gif

The whole point of BartPE Builder or of any similar project is that you build your own with the original files you are licensed for!

jaclaz ... thanks for the link to BartPE licensing ... actually, I did d/l BartPE v3.1.10a and using it and the SP3 Network Installation executable have created slipstreamed source files from my own licensed Win XP O/S / CD ... I haven't built from those yet ... I was just playing around with HawkPE-42 because the mention of USB booting caught my eye ... Hawk's actually responsible for bringing PeToUSB and detailed instructions for its' use to my attention ... although I have since seen PeToUSB briefly mentioned at nu2.nu ...

I didn't think my Q. would raise any hackles ... I just couldn't find anything here that dealt with my exact notion ... I only found people who wanted to revise an already built / burnt CD to include missing drivers ... so far, I have only read about it being possible by doing a follow-up rebuild / re-burn.

I just thought that with the USB stick, it should be possible to edit / add driver files (and plugin files, for that matter) at will ... I just need to better understand what the build process does with the driver files and where all it puts them.

Well, NO.

The "general approach" of a PE build is "build once boot many", similar to "WORM" if you like the comparison.

Of course having it on a writable media, helps a lot, but you will have to deal with a number of issues.

The DPS is a (working) "general" approach, you add the DPS to your SOURCE and then build BartPE, of course you will find a lot odf drivers you won't ever need and the size of the build will increase.

Or you add them in the drivers folder, and build:

However, if you are going to take the "hard way", here is some reference, cannot say how much useful:

jaclaz ... WOW ... I've been reading all morning ... my head hurts ...

I went to the links you provided, read the associated threads and went down most every path that cropped up in the process ...

I have a better understanding of the issues involved with what I was considering (not so much anymore), and, have discovered a number of neat tools ... many thanks!

Not to mention, I now feel like I know a few of the regular posters around here from reading their banter, yours included ... you folks have a pretty cool forum here.

A little irony thrown in as well I take it ... the adventures of smallhagrid (mark) were not lost on me ... FFF
