wasn't sure where to post this sence its about bart's network boot disk. is there any way to be able to run fixmbr through the network boot disk on a windows xp machine with a optical drive and one that wont boot through usb thumbdrives except for some persific usb optical drives?

ive got an older toshiba portege m200. i need to fix the mbr on it so i can get windows to boot up again. its currently got a currupted grub boot loader on it and grub spits out error 17 at me. this was after i removed ubuntu and redid the partition so that the harddrive now has the main windows partition and a seconddary 14 gig partition. anbd i need to be able to fix the mbr obn it sence i forgot to run the command after i removed ubuntu i know silly me.

Don't live cds have the ability to load linux to the hd, and wouldn't that fix the mbr?

if a mod wants to move this to the right section go ahead. as for the fixmbr command its part of the windows xp recovery console so im not sure if ill be able to run it vi bart's network boot disk or not. this stink and i cant get access to my xp disc to reinstall xp eaither which stinks.

ok i got a pxeboot.com to open up on the latop vi tftp32.exe using windows xp as my main os instead of windows but everytime i try to use net use i get error 85. the local device is already in use

ok i got pass that error and am getting error 1312 A specified logon session does not exist. It may already have been terminated.

heres precisely what im typing and doing.

net use z: \\pc name\folder /user:name

it then asks me for my password for that account i type it in and then i get error 1312

Does "/user:name" exist and does it have permission to access the "\\pc name\folder " folder and files?

Topken,
if I may you are approaching, it the wrong way.

You have a problem->you diagnose the problem->you decide which is the fix for it->you decide which tool you should use to apply the fix->you ask for help about how to use the tool.

Given that the diagnose part is allright, your question should be:
QUOTE
How can I fix a MBR from a bootable floppy?

And not:
QUOTE
How can I build the Bart's Network bootdisk in order to be able to run fixmbr?

First allows for a number of answer, second does not as you cannot run fixmbr from DOS, and having network support is pretty much complex, as you just experimented...

I do suspect that also the diagnose part is not correct, and that the MBR is allright and simply you deleted the menu.lst or some file, since "Error 17" means " File not found".

And you should be able to access grub (or maybe grub4dos, since you had an XP on that PC) command line....unsure.gif
