Adding drivers to BartPE, NIC, SATA, video

Ed_P post Mar 3 2008, 09:33 AM Post #1
Adding specific drivers

Adding a lot of drivers provides a lot of support for many types of machines. It also increases boot time. If your needs are limited to a few machines manually adding just the drivers you need may be a better approach.

That's for SURE ...
one of my laptops has USB 1.1 ports. The XPE USB boot takes FOREVER when loading driverpacks; HOWEVER, it seems there is (sort of) a way around that.

I have been using PENetCFG (instead of XPE networking) in my XPE USB builds.
I have noticed that, when I choose NO at the PENetCFG boot prompt "Start Network Services?" -
it seems that XPE does NOT load the driverpack NIC/WLAN drivers, and
my XPE USB boot goes quickly enough ...

I'm not sure (yet) if the same is true of BPE & UBCD4W boots.
I (so far) have never needed/used PE networking nor WLAN anyway ...

Then deactivate the DriverPack plugin(s). Your system will be quicker, and smaller. happy62.gif

NO ... because I might need/use the driverpacks in some unusual situation.
This way I can have them available & usable without screwing up my boot time when I don't need them.

So, what you want to accomplish is to use DriverPacks with XPE, yet having a quick boot time? The only way you can reduce the boot time of your XPE, is to make it as small as possible, the more drivers you have, the more hardware support, hence it will give you a longer boot time. The only way, I can think of, you can use DriverPacks with BartPE, yet keeping a small build is to use something like "DriverImportPE", as it lets you load drivers manually after boot. What I'm currently doing is just add the MassStorage DriverPack to my build, then load the LAN, WLAN, Audio, and Video drivers from DriverPacks after boot. I have not tried it on a USB pendrive, I use CDs. Also note that DriverImportPE is NOT free-of-charge.

So just disable (this doesn't mean you have to delete them) the LAN & WLAN DriverPacks, so they won't be added to your build, but if you want/need them you can enable them again. But since you mentioned that

then adding Network DriverPacks is pointless in your case.

So what's the point of you starting this thread? what are you trying to accomplish?

I have already explicitly posted the benefit of using PENetCFG in build with driverpacks.
Whether anyone else sees any benefit in that is up to them.

You might be able to create a multiboot xpe usb using hardlinks (to minimize the allocated space) and a bootloader to choose which xpe you want at boot.

There's no benefit at all, you're just skipping Network Support, thus giving you a shorter boot time.
Ed_P
A shorter boot time is a benefit if it's what you desire. wink.gif

Like I've said before, the opinions of virtual strangers don't concern me.

Any difference with the opinions of virtual known people? dubbio.gif unsure.gif

I'm virtually sure AEN was posting a tip rather than asking for help. wink.gif
