Full Version: "XPE Builder": constantly rebooting
The CD Forum > Bart's PE Builder > Plugins

Hi experts - I hope you can help me.

I have a new PC with an Intel DH67CL SandyBridge motherboard. I am using an IDE CD drive, and therefore I have to use a PCI IDE controller - in this case, Silicon Image SiI 680.
I am trying to boot from an "XPE Builder" CD which I have created, where I incorporated the SiI drivers.

Here is the problem: the first BartPE screen does show up fine. (In other words, the PC recognizes the CD fine). It shows the boot menu (Reboot, Recovery console, Start XPE, etc).

Then, when I select XPE, it shows an initial message, then the screen turn black, and then the computer reboots! (and the BartPE boot screen re-appears).

Help! What to do??

Thanks in Advance

Silicon Image SiI 680.

Which BIOS and Driver do you use?

http://www.siliconimage.com/support/search...id=31&cat=3

Which IDE drive do you use? How old is this drive?
Do you use a reliable writer and media?

Did you add other mass storage dirvers?
E.g. isastor.sys? Which version?

Does it reboot without a BSOD?
This indicates a more hardware related issue: HAL, kernel, BIOS
Press F7 at F6 message.
Or disable kernels at BIOS: create a single core machine for testing.

cdob: thanks for the quick and nice reply. Here are answers to your questions.
QUOTE
Which BIOS and Driver do you use?
The BIOS is SiI 3.2.10. The driver is: pnp680.sys, version 1.0.0.12.
QUOTE

Its a Plextor PX-750A optical CD drive.
QUOTE
Do you use a reliable writer and media?
I guess they are pretty reliable.
QUOTE
Did you add other mass storage drivers? E.g. isastor.sys? Which version?
I will check and report.
QUOTE
Does it reboot without a BSOD?
Affirmative.

Press F7 at F6 message.
It doesn't show an F6 message.

I have disabled the multi-core, set a single core. The only difference now: the blank screen shows for about 15 seconds, it then reboots.

There is no "isastor" in the XPE Builder log. How do I check if the necessary mass storage drivers are included? Which are they?

The BIOS is SiI 3.2.10. The driver is: pnp680.sys,

This refers to IDE/RAID. I would use a BASE BIOS and driver at a ATAPI device.

That's a TEAC DV-W516E oem drive.

Plextor dosn't manufacturer optical drives anymore.

QUOTE
It doesn't show an F6 message.

That's a early error. No windows drivers involved.

Use good CD media.
Try another IDE cable.
Does board offers different PCI slots? Try different PCI slots.
And try the Silicon Image BASE BIOS and drivers.

iastor 10.6.0.1002

However this refer to onboard SATA controller. I doubt a missing driver cause the behaviour.

Added, this reminds to missing/failed ntdetect.com.
Basic testing:
Does ISO image boot at a virtual machine?
Does CD boot at another real machine?
MiriamG
QUOTE
Does CD boot at another real machine?
Affirmative. On another computer with a similar motherboard, it gets into XPE and reaches the point where you need to select a shell. There are some issues there, but that's for a different post.

What's a "Base BIOS", and where do I get it, and how do I install it?
QUOTE

I don't have a virtual machine.
If it's a hardware issue, can you please suggest how to debug it? The IDE cable is fine, in my opinion. it has worked before, recently. The CD drive? Note that the computer recognized the CD and showed the opening XPE menu. It reboots only after selecting "Start XPE" and issuing a message like "CD starting".

Thanks in advance for your suggestions - MiriamG

Read manufacturer links at Post #2

XPE dosn't offere a shell by default.
Which plugins do you use?

There is no OS error correction at PE booting.
A readable CD at running OS dosn't matter, PE booting may fail at half broken hardware anyway.

QUOTE
after selecting "Start XPE"
How do you select?
Did you create a multi boot CD?
MiriamG
QUOTE
Which plugins do you use?
I've used "XPE Builder 0.1.0.146", using this file: http://www.llanelly.com/downloads/file/11-xpebuilder.html, from this site: http://www.llanelly.com/projects/xpe-builder.html including the plugins that come with it.
I added a new plugin with the pnp680.sys driver for the PCI IDE Silicon Graphics ("Dynamode") controller card.
QUOTE
How do you select? Did you create a multi boot CD?
Using that version, once you create an iso image, burn it and boot with it, it shows an opening screen with several options, one of them is "Start XPE". Once I select "Start XPE", it shows a message, something like "Starting XPE", but then it goes into a black screen (no BSOD), then reboots.
cdob
As for testing: disable multi boot plugin and build a new BartPE CD.

In the meantime, I have circumvented the problem by installing a SATA CD drive. Now,
1. The PC boots from the CD allright, showing these messages and multi-boot menu:
"Emergency Recovery Disk
Visit http://www.llanelly.com
Options
Boot from drive C:
Reboot
Launch "Windows XPE"
Offline NT password and registry editor
Windows™ Recovery Console"

2. Selecting: 'Launch "Windows XPE"', it shows the message: "Starting CD ... ... OK", then (after several minutes of CD activity):
3. The blue screen of "MS Windows XPE" shows up, with a little menu with three choices: Explorer, BBLean, and C: Console.
4. Now, if I select BBLean, it does go into that shell and menu collection. But I would like to use the "Windows Explorer" shell, in order to browse disks and files. The problem is, when I select "Explorer",
5. it shows a nice picture of an astronomic nebula (or galaxy), does nothing, no Windows Explorer screen; then goes back to point 3 above (blue screen of "MS Windows XPE").

And so on and so forth.

What should I do to enable the Windows Explorer software?
How can I check that the Explorer plugin is enabled?
