Full Version: BSOD on ACPI.SYS on new systems

Hi all, recently i've bumped into an issue with my BartPE when i try to run it on new laptops (as in new models, (i work in a computer store)

It's a STOP 0x0000007E error and it mentions acpi.sys , first i assumed it was related to the Mass Storage controller , i tried loading the "F6 Drivers" (it's an Intel SATA controller btw)
I checked the device_ID in windows and it's ven_8086&dev_1C03 , so i should pick "iaAHCI_Mobile = "Intel® Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller"" in the F6 list, which i did...
(there is no AHCI / IDE option in the bios so i can't check if that is the issue)

Then i thought it might be an issue that the laptop had too much ram (it has 8 Gig), that for some reason the outdated XP boot had problems with that, but when i removed ram so it only had 2 gigs the problem still exists ...
To make sure my BartPE project isn't the problem i also created a new "clean" build , i also tried SP1a , SP2 and SP3 builds of Windows XP as a base for the building process...
**edit : it also happens when i just try to load a Windows XP Setup on that machine so it's also not something "bartpe" related ... :/
If this was just one laptop or even just one model that would be ok but it happens on a lot of brand new (intel controller based) laptops... so that bums me out sad.gif

Anyone got an idea ? It's certainly not a hardware issue with this specific model because it has it on a lot of new (i3/i5/i7) laptops...

Update : ok i'm closing in on the problem and i've found some ways to boot into BartPE smile.gif

I'm further testing this, if you guys want i'll post the solution here when i'm done testing it... (but maybe it's weird that i'm posting a solution to my own issue =))

We get a lot of new laptops that the manufacturer no longer has XP drivers. I suspect that is the problem that you are running into. Since BartPE uses XP and requires XP drivers you will have to find XP drivers. That becomes a catch 22. Contact the manufacturer and find out if they have XP drivers for their new laptop.

Which driver version do you use?
Which drivers did you add to BartPE?

Name some examples anyway.

Which mass storage BIOS settings do you use? IDE, AHCI or RAID?
Korlean
I'm using the latest F6 Intel RST Drivers (10.6.0.1002) , for testing purposes i didn't add any drivers into the BartPE itself, that way i can experiment easier by using F6 ...

It's locked in AHCI mode (the bios does not have an option to change it)

This laptop is a dv6-6040eb

Ok the solution is to disable the ACPI functions when booting , you can do this by pressing F7 when it asks to press F6 to load Mass Storage Drivers

Or you can use the plugin Hilander999 made to disable the ACPI functions

Hope this might be usefull to other people...

Yes, that's a work around. That's a BIOS issue. Try a BIOS update.
Most likely some manufacturer dosn't test XP at new machines anymore.

In the meantime I booted a T520 with Core i5-2520M and ven_8086&dev_1C03:
ACPI is enabled. BartPE does boot.

the good MS guys have "strange ways".

As a reminder, F keys that you can press when you are suggested to press F6:
F7 (and F5) explained:

F10 (access to recovery console):

If anyone knows more, please post info about them. smile.gif
