Full Version: Trying to Make BartPE Bootable CD
The CD Forum > Bart's PE Builder > Troubleshooting

Errors out before doing anything. Didnt think I was trying anything fancy. I just want a bootable CD with common NIC drivers. Everytime I use the cd we have, the NIC drivers I need are not there. I tried loading drivers manually into the pebuilder\drivers folder, but that errored out as well. I cannot figure out what app is using the required file besides pebuilder itself.

Any help/hints would be greatly appreciated.

Manually delete the BartPE folder. Maybe you had it open with Windows Explorer when PEBuilder was trying to run.

It wouldnt let me. It says it is in use by another program. I closed anything that might be using it. Even tried thru the DOS prompt, same error message. Nothing showing in task manager.

Where are you getting the Windows system files to build from?

Reboot.

If that doesn't work reboot to Safe mode and delete the folder.

"Things" that could be locking on to it include AntiVirus, Firewall, Anti-malware, even Windows indexing. Rebooting should break the connection.

From a WindowsXP SP3 cd in the dvd drive. Thats where I pointed the app to. The OS running on my desktop is WIN7.

Did rebooting help?

Do you have XP's setupapi.dll in the PEBuilder folder?

I do not see it.

Than you need to add it.

I rebooted and was able to delete the BartPE folder. It looks like it is building the correctly.

It failed...will try again. Log is attached.

I certainly expected this to be much simpler.

Thank you for your assistance.

Where do I find this file??

In the source CD/.iso that you use.
In the /I386, it should be compressed as SETUPAPI.DL_, simply use 7-zip (or makecab/extract etc.) to uncompress it to the PEbuilder folder.

To explain, the BartPE builder was born to be run ON Windows XP (or Server 2003) long before Vista ph34r.gif or 7 came out, and the requisite for SETUPAPI.DLL used to be "normally" satisfied by the OS that was running.
With Vista ph34r.gif and later, you need to add it.

@Demonio

To my list of possible locking items add Windows 7 UAC and even Windows User Account Type.

Be sure you are using an Admin account and check your UAC Setting. Mine is set to the bottom setting.

Sounds like I should try this at home on a Windows XP laptop. I will report the results this evening.

Side question: Is it possible to load a network drive after BartPE has booted? Such as, when it asks if you want to press F6 to add a SCSI driver, can you load a NIC driver? All I really need is to load some network drivers. I have a working boot disc.

I believe so, depending on what tools you have in your BartPE system. As for F6 I don't know, but it seems reasonable. From within BartPE paraglider's HWpnp plugin is helpful and may be required, I'm not sure.
