Full Version: Powerdesk (explorer Clone) Plugin
The CD Forum > Bart's PE Builder > Plugins
daederatz
Hi,

I started fiddling with Barts PE 3 weeks ago and yesterday
I finally managed to produce an nice, working CD with all
the necessary tools (for me, at least).

So I thought I could give something back to this forum by
sharing my working plugin for "Powerdesk Pro 5". It's a very
useful Explorer-Clone from VCOM, I used the Pro version to
build the plugin, but it should work with the freeware version
too.

Here is the link to the freeware version:
http://www.v-com.com/product/pd_free_trial.html

an here's another thread describing some of the features:
http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?show...20&hl=powerdesk

The pro version installs quite a lot of files, mostly for it's
"quickview" feature, I removed most of them and ended with up
with only these left:

arcinfo.dll
Blank.ico
CMMAP000.BIN
CMMAP000.SBC
CSFTPL32.DLL
DirIcons.jdb
docinfo.dll
DOSBOOT.PIF

TRAYHOOK.DLL
VSPDF.BIN
Wheat.lic
Wheat.ocx

(maybe even more files could be stripped, but this seemed small enough for me)

First you have to install powerdesk on your normal system. (in this example:
to "C:\Powerdesk")
Now create a folder "powerdesk" inside your PE "plugin" folder _and_ then a
folder "files" inside the "powerdesk" folder and finally a folder "pd5" inside
"files".

Copy all above listed files in the "pd5" folder, plus the two directories
"Administrator" and "Favorites" (from "C:\Powerdesk").

No you should have:

\<BartPE Folder>
......plugin
..........powerdesk (cont. *.inf & *.xml, see below)
................files
...................pd5 (cont. all files from the listing)
.....................Administrator
.....................Favorites

Now comes the tricky part wink.gif
As Powerdesk integrates deeply into Windows, there are a many reg-entrys that must
be set in PE.

Note that your %systemdrive% (CD-Drive from within BartPE) _has to be_ X:
This happens automatically if you use XP SP2 as your source. If you use SP1 or 2k3,
you can either fiddle with regexpander (no support from me wink.gif ) or use the "subst"
command as explained here:
http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?show...c=6075&hl=subst

On my setup, the last command in "ramfiles.cmd" (from "autoramresizer" plugin) is:
subst X: %SystemDrive%\

Holy PowerDesk Pro Batman!

Loved PowerDesk Pro for my main machine, and now a working plugin for PE. Nice work daederatz!

I've taken the liberty to clean up the .inf a bit (22kb down to 13kb), and added a help file for the plugin.

As well, since I prefer a dual-pane verical window, I made this the default when PDP opens in PE. There are also 5 buttons in something called the "LaunchBar" which are functional... 1) PowerDesk Find (customized icon), 2) regedit, 3) MS Paint, 4) notepad and 5) wordpad (These will function if the apps [except PDP Find] are located in their normal locations on your HD [WinXP locations]). The "right-click" context menus work (I tried many of them - don't know if they ALL work), and successfully Zipped, UnZipped, and created a SFX Zip all from within PDP.

You can view the plugin help file HERE
The new .inf file can be viewed HERE
You can download my complete PDP plugin HERE

In keeping with my desire to have all my apps fit on a mini-CD, I also successfully UPX'd all compatible files and everything continues to function well. Uncompressed folder size was 5,061,117 bytes. Post UPX'd folder size 2,555,904 bytes (a 2,505,213 savings or ~49.5%)

Thanks again to daederatz for your fine work. (I gave you credit in the inf and help file which you so humbly [or forgetfully] did not do)

@ DigiWiz

That's what I had hoped, someone with enough knowledge (and patience) fo finetune the plugin!

The working right-klick features are one of the best things in Powerdesk on PE, forgot to mention
this in my first post.
Im still not quite sure how you figured which entrys in the original *.inf where not needed, but
anyway, the smaller the better. It's quite late already, maybe tomorrow it will be easier understand
for me wink.gif

Obviously the original layout was my personal favourite (I dont use the launchbar at all).
With only a little experience in PE-Building it should be possible for others to customize their
Powerdesk (from within standard XP) and then replace the relevant reg-entrys in "PowerDeskPro5.inf"
with their own settings.

Regarding the missing help file, hmmm... I was just too lazy, thanks for helping
me out!

One question, I've used UPX myself (on bootdisks), but there has to be a speed penalty? At the moment, my own PE-CD is at 430MB, so no need for compression just yet.

Anyway, many thanks for you help!

Greetings

I tried this great file explorer before, but finally gave up........ because it is unstable in my PE environment, it is easily hang!!! especailly when copying files..... do you two got this hang??
DigiWiz

@ semson

I've had no problems here whatsoever - but based on your previous unpleasant experiences, I put PDP through a few more tests, and all is rock-solid stable here. I copied a 136MB folder from one partition to another (on the same HD), and also to a second hard drive, then deleted them both - all went smoothly and lightning quick. As a side-note, I have long been a fan of PDP's File Find - it is hands-down, the fastest file finder I've ever used - puts WinXP's search to shame.

Assuming you have the correct files, I think you'll be pleased with PDP. I made some very minor revisions to the plugin - added notation in the help file about the subst X: %SystemDrive%\ requirement, and how to implement it, along with a link to AutoRAMresizer that contains a modified ramfiles.cmd file that will do the work for you.

@DigiWiz,

I will give it a try later. and here come with anyother question.

this problem happen on winxp/2k3, the PowerDesk 5 I use is the free version, after system heavily loaded, for example after loading Photoshop, Dreamwear.... (any other programs that will make windows use the swap file....) after those "heavy" process, PowerDesk react very slow. close and re-open doesn't help, but a reboot is need. do you got this problem???
Dogboy75024
Digiwiz,
You know I'm a big fan of your's. I have used PowerDesk over 5 years and prefer it to all others I've tried .Just a couple questions. Does modifying ramdrive to X: cause problems with other apps that use it? Or can you use a different letter to associate the ramdrive with.
DigiWiz
@ Dogboy75024

You know, I'm not sure... I just followed daederatz's instructions exactly - as best I can tell, X:\ isn't so much a RamDrive, as it is just the place set aside to look at the CD. On my PE configuration, B:\ is still the RamDrive.

DW

smile.gif
daederatz
Sorry for replying so late, I'm pretty busy at the moment.

Anyway, the infamous "subst" trick has nothing to do with your ramdrive.
It just maps a given Driveletter to the contents of a given Directory or Drive.

If you open any Filemanager after aplying the above "subst" command, you'll see
1) your CDDrive with the Driveletter assigned by BartsPE on bootup
2) another Drive X: with exactly the same contents

Because PE up to XP SP1 just assigns the first free Driveletter it finds to your
CD (i.e. your %systemdrive%) and on the other hand Powerdesk cannot read
variables (like %systemdrive%) in its registry entrys, "subst" is one way of
getting Powerdesk to always find its home directory on "X:\Programs\PD5".

The other way would be the use of the regexpander plugin, but "subst" seemed
easier to me (and it works flawless, so far).

If someone wanted to enable PowerDesk's Quickview features, which files would be needed in addition to the list above, and would there be any additional registry changes needed?
solara
Also, with your PowerDesk plugin, are you able to select a folder or files and get 'Properties' information about them? I can't get mine to work - nothing happens.

And for your Launchbar, were you able to enable icons for those programs? All my Launchbar programs have a generic icon that makes distinguishing them difficult without hovering the mouse over them and waiting for the popup text to appear.

Other than that, PowerDesk is an awesome file manager. It loads faster than 2xExplorer and has a better interface than either TotalCommander or 2xExplorer or the native WinXP Explorer IMHO.

Would be great to get the Quickview function working - though I notice that all the dll for the quickview plugins total about 4.5 mb (119 files) - not too bad since that can replace other viewer type programs and is far more convenient combined with a file manager.
DigiWiz
smile.gif

@solara

all the "launch" icons are showing for me, but remember that if you have those programs (PD Find, regedit, mspaint, notepad, and wordpad) in some other place than where PowerDesk expects to find them, they'll show up as generic icons. My PE build is using WinXP Pro and they show up fine.

Yes, I can also see the properties fine by right-clicking on a file within PowerDesk... perhaps you are using a slightly different plugin? Maybe if you used mine (download link in a prior post) those items might work.

DW

I had downloaded all the files from your site. But the Launchbar settings were hardset for regedit, mspaint, notepad, and wordpad on drive C:, which was why I was getting nonfunctioning generic icons.

I went back and edited the registry to point to drive X: Here's the revised launchbar registry settings:

And about the properties, I am able to see the sizes of selected files and (I think) folders if I use the right-click menu. But if I use the properties toolbar button, it does not display folder info correctly.

I am trying to get Quickview to work - tried just including all the viewer dll files in the pd5 folder, but that does not work. Any ideas to getting Quickview to work? The only registry settings that I can find are these EMPTY ones (on my WinXP):

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mijenix]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mijenix\PowerDesk]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mijenix\PowerDesk\Version3.0]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mijenix\PowerDesk\Version3.0\Dlg Helpers]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mijenix\PowerDesk\Version3.0\Dlg Helpers\Applications]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mijenix\PowerDesk\Version3.0\Viewer]

Thanks.

@solara:

Great idea about changing the settings to look at drive x: I'll have to do that.

I see what you mean about the properties - right-clicking works, but the toolbar button does not.

I have not worked with Quickview...
ptrut
I just aded all the Powerdesk files and Quickviev + all else works perfectly
solara
Since the whole PowerDesk takes 34mb on my WinXP, I was hoping to enable Quickview by selecting only the needed files since my CD is getting a bit tight on space.

Current PowerDesk is around 4.5mb, all the dll files for Quickview are about 4.5mb. I wish I knew which files it needed in addition to the one posted for the original plugin.

@ptrut,

Which inf file did you use? The abbreviated one by DigiWiz? If so, then we know we don't need any further registry changes, just files.
ptrut
yes i used the original inf file [ made no changes to registry]
solara
Okay after some exploring of the dll properties and trial & error, I was able to get PowerDesk's builtin Viewer to work at a minimum installation size of around 12mb total. Haven't built the CD, but I'm pretty sure it'll work.

The odd thing is, the viewer will work... but without some additional files, the graphics files are not displayed at an optimal resolution (PowerDesk beeps an error when it opens any files, but it does display it).

Files needed:

-all VS*.*.dll files
-all SCC*.*.dll files
-AWVIEW32.dll
-DEBMP.DLL
-DEHEX.DLL
-DEMET.DLL
-DESS.DLL
-DETREE.DLL
-DEWP.DLL
-MJXAni.dll
-(I included all the mp3*.*, mx*.*.dll files - I'm pretty sure these are used to view mp3 files, etc.....and play them...not sure if playing them works in WinPE yet).

All the above files bring the size of plugin to around 12mb.

The files which do not seem absolutely necessary but contribute to improved quality of viewing of the graphics files are all the Leadtools dll files: lf*.*.dll, lt*.*.dll, and lv*.*.dll files.

If all the Leadtools dll files are included, the total plugin size is 20mb.

There are some additional files (*.flt) which are described as graphics import filter files. They are about 3.3 mb in size...but they don't seem to be vital to quickview.....at least with my brief testing. Btw, I couldn't get Quickview to view PDF files properly even in my regular WinXP setup...no idea why.
solara
@ptrut

Since you're using the entire installation from PowerDesk for your WinPE, are you able to view mp3 info/play them from within the quickview window?

I've included everything from the normal PD5 installation except for all the Kodak and Canon and Olympus files, and I can't get the mp3 viewer/player to work. Note that I can play mp3s fine with Irfanview or WMPlayer.

I just ran Dependency Walker on the mxviewer.dll and mxmp3vw.dll, and the following dll files are not found in my PE i386 folder:

-efsadu.dll (not even found on my WinXP system, but mp3 preview/play works fine nonetheless)
-mlang.dll
-mshtml.dll
-msrating.dll

Maybe I'll try building it with these included to see if they work....if anyone else is able to get PDP5 and its mp3 preview/player working, please post your method.
solara
I rebuilt my disk with the above-mentioned dll files to see if I could get PDP5's mp3 preview/playing feature to work.

Unfortunately it still does not work.....anyone using PDP5 and have that feature working?

I can view an mp3's tag info as well as edit it, but can't preview/play the music.
Z.C.
NOTE: I have NOT tried this plugin yet. All my info is from years of use in Windows.

The viewer technology in PowerDesk is a customised and trimmed version of QuickView Plus. As a result, enabling the preview pane requiresregistry information located in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SCC and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SCC branches.

Also, I prefer just to add QuickView Plus (v8) and leave it.

By adding QuickView Plus as well as catching the other branch values, you may be able to reactivate media playing in the viewer pane.
