Hi there,

Background :
-Using WinXP Pro on a Toshiba laptop
-Thinking of using a freeware imaging program DrvImagerXP to image my laptop HDD onto an *external* firewire HDD

Query :
-Can I use BartPE to boot up, format/wipe my laptop HDD, then restore the HDD image residing on my external firewire HDD onto my laptop?
-Will I need any other software/plug-ins to achieve the above?

Many thanks in advance for responding!! smile.gif

I don't think plug & play is enough for USB or fire wire hard disks

Have you tried the usb plugin created by Mick Leong

; - support for removable USB stick / travelling devices (working OK)
; - Support for removable USB v1 v1.1 and v2 (working but incomplete)
; - Support for removable IEEE 1394 removable devices (working but incomplete)

The original version assumes you are using XPE Explorer plugin and predates the plug & play plugins.
If you search on USB (over last 6 or 9 months) you will find my hack of Micks USB plugin which works under Nu2menu

I have only tried this out with USB devices not Firewire

I created a plugin with with pluginbuilder313 for Bart PE 3032 running XPE 0.9.9. I have only tested with Virtual PC but it seems to work. I was able to image and restore the local drive. What I would like to test next is if I can map a network drive and save the image file to a server on the network. Tonight I hope to test on a live CD vs. using virtual PC. (But, I am guessing if I can create the file moving it will not be to big of an issue. However, I do not have firewire drive to test that option.)

I think this is a great idea,

Hi Dan,

Do I take it that you have built a BartPE plugin for DrvImagerXP? If yes, would you care to share the plugin?

Thanks

Boot with BartPE and use ghost v8 to create the image on to the external USB hdd. To restore just revese the process.

It works fine. It recoganises any HDD as long as it is connected while booting up.

That is one of the greatest advantages of BartPE.

@doxford

created one by myself as well.

Great, so it is already available. Saves me a lot of work biggrin.gif

To earlier poster, Ghost is not freeware so I am trying to do it on the cheap with the freeware DrvImagerXP wink.gif

Thanks all for helping out !!

The author of DriveImagerXP did make WinPE versions of both DriveImagerXP and DriveClonerXP. Of course they have become somewhat hard to find since they no longer seem to be available from the author's site. smile.gif

DriveImagerXPwpe 2.0

and

DriveClonerXPwpe 2.0

This gets better and better tongue.gif

Questions :

1) How do I use the WinPE versions with BartPE?
2) Can I for example, put the WinPE version on a floppy and execute the programme from BartPE environment?

Thanks!
Jotnar
I would think that you could. They appear to be single files that run standalone.

Cheers
